For the last 6-7 weeks I've had some form of mystery illness which had me out for a while. Basically I had fair pains in my abdomen, kept throwing up and couldnt eat. I've got better now and only have occassional light pains in my lowere left and right abdomen, pretty much in my groin. I've been in hispital twice for appendicitis and sent home twice as they didnt think it was. This has gone from a question about training to asking for a diagnosis hasn't it? Anyway basically I want an oppinion on wether I should start training again. I lost a lot of weight and a lot of muscle definition when i was severly ill and I want it back!!!

What does your doctor say?

Muscle definition does come back. Last year I was out of training for 3 months after a c-section and pneumonia. Now my weight is lower (better) than when I got pregnant, and the muscles are showing again.

could be diverticulitis, except that I never had the vomiting. Not sure if it is one of the symptoms. Do you have issues going #2 sometimes, constipation or blood at all?

Good luck in finding out your ailment. In the meantime, if you do not have pain, train.

I'll start training again then. As for your other question i had constipation for a time but not anymore. Seeing as I'm eating and stopped vomiting and such i think somethings going on that's causing the pains but I had a virus on top of it. A lot of people in my area had the same thing save for the pains and when i was in hospital we had a few people come in with the pains with nothing else.

If the pain is fairly regular and enough to keep you out of training I would go to your regular GP and tell him/her whats going on. They might refer you for scans. I ignored abdominal pains for a while thinking they were just random/normal and it turned out to part of a larger health issue thats given me all sorts of problems.

It will probably turn out to be nothing but it's always worth finding out. Good luck. :)

cheers but I've been there and done it. Ive been in hospital twice and sent home after a week each time. I've been toying with the idea of Chron's disease but my parents don't think so. I posted this on another forum as well and a nurse came back saying it sounds like an infection. So short of going back to hospital and getting them to do every scan they can, I'm kinda faced with just waiting it out. It's definately getting better which is a good sign and we've been wondering if it's a gut infection thats just taking its time passing. What was wrong with you if you dont mind me asking?

Polycystic Ovarian Sydrome. Being that you don't have any ovaries though I think you can safely rule that out. :D

Main thing is don't panic yourself with what it could be - you would have a list as long as your arm. In regards to training through the pain just do what you feel comfortable with, start out with really light excercise and increase your intensity if your body feels ok. If it triggers the pain in a big way though think about taking some more time to rest up.

Hope it works out.

I might be able to rule that one out. You sound just like my mum she keeps telling me not to worry. The trainings going okay, i dont have any gear other than my punchbag so most of what i do focuses on my arms, just had to ease up on the sit ups a bit. My BJJ going fine with it though which I as a bit surprised at to be honest.

Have you tried a Chinese Doctor? Quite a few of them about, I've heard some good reports from people I wouldn't have expected to even consider them.
Keep on at your GP though, they'll fob you off if they think it's going to cost their practice money.

never had much faith in chinese remedies if I'm honest but I'm willing to try anything at the minute. In an interesting note theres a survey in my local paper asking about children with stomach pains and how it affects families. I think this could be a common problem or something. One thing I'm not sure i mentioned before though is i also sometime get these feelings of moisture in my abdomen. like a quick flash of liquid or something. This summer holiday has turned out real fun

Have the medics ruled out IBS?? A couple of friends have this and the symptoms sound similar. Chinese medicine is worth considering as they treat the whole body.

Good luck with getting it sorted.

Dude, I have the same problem!

Seriously, I've been going to the doctors for blood tests and stuff. I'm actually losing weight, despite the fact I keep eating. My weight actually dropped from 150 lbs to 130 lbs in a few days.

Every now and then, I have a feeling like I've been punched in the stomach. I curl over in pain, and it feels like someone is just twisting my insides.

But yeah, the doctors aren't sure what's wrong.

thanks. well I'll hav ea look into the old eastern remedies I guess. As for IBS as far as I can tell that's sort of a label doctors use if they cant think of anything else, my brother was diagnosed with it and nothing was wrong with him. Also I have few of the normal symptoms for IBS as well.

Generally speaking, if it was IBS, then you may be experiencing constipation or its opposite (I can't spell it, so don't ask me to!). The abdominal pains are generally located in the lower left side of the belly area. There are a lot of causes of IBS, so it can be very hard to identify, and also difficult to treat.
Chinese medicine can help, but you still have to find out what triggers it, that way you can start working to avoid the triggers.

I hope it's not IBS though. I know of many people who's lives have literally been ruined by the condition.

Have you considered an environmental cause for your problems? If alot of people in the area have similar symptoms then maybe its a problem with, for example, chemical contamination of the water supply, or some form of atmospheric pollution that hasn't been officially detected. Doctors (in general) don't consider environmental factors in illness unless there are really obvious reasons for them to do so, e.g. a big chemical spill at a local plant.

we did consider this. my mum had it briefly when she used the water, but my stepdad didnt and he only drinks coffee. we looked at the water and there were little things floating in it. i passed it off because ive had it so long, but it could have lingered i guess

We've been using a filter and it was a bit after that that I started getting better. I stopped throwing up anyway and the pains got less frequent and less painful. Is it possible its something to do with the water and its just lingering?

On a serious point have you had a colonoscopy?

It could very well be something to do with the water. Have you reported it to your water company or even the environmental health department of your council? It might have been a one off contamination event or, worse, an ongoing problem with your supply.

the only thing i would add is that if u think its something that could be passed to someone else i would be careful that u dont pass it to anyone that u train with, i know it sounds like something stupid but when im sick or something i never train cause i dont want to pass it to someone else at the school and we all probably know how fast a sickness or something with go through people at a dojo

well the current idea is gall stones. the pains have near stopped but i am now sometimes passing stools that have small light areas. i went to doc but i dont feel i told him anywhere near enough. the plan is to get an ultrasound and im pressuring for a gastronomy ( i think it called). im still okay with day-to-day but this really running me down. in honesty i ended up hugging my mum and burst out crying. ( any hard image i may have had is now gone) thihgs got better with the pain, and now this.
