What exactly is Moo Duk Kwan? We have a Moo Duk Kwan banner at our Dojang, and I don't know what it is. Is it an organization like WTF?

Its more of a style. It is said that Soo Bak Do and Tang Soo Do came from this style.

Go here for some info http://www.geocities.com/nedu_99/history.htm

Not a style but a school.

There are two schools of MDK, one is TKD, and the other is TSD . . . or as Chazz said SooBahkDo. The MDK went through a split in I think it was the late 50's when Hwang Kee didn't agree with the TKD development comittee on some areas and went his seperate way. At the time he was the Kwanjang of the MDK, however some of his senior students wanted to continue with the development of TKD so broke away and took some of the MDK school with them.

From there you get the MDK taekwondo school, and then the MDK Tangsoodo school. Each having their different ideas, and following their styles.

I actually have seen alot more MDK affiliated schools as of late. Interesting actually as the actual original "kwans" are in my mind obsolete because of the world governing bodies.

We've been discussing this in the Tang Soo Do forum. The Moo Duk Kwan is an organization, and literally translates to the "Institute of Martial Virtue." Please read the thread at:
