View Full Version : Dislocations
STASH

Ok, heres what happened: last friday me ans a couple buddies were doing some all out-fullcontact, everything goes sparring. My opponent launched a high roundhouse at me, I stepped back but I wasnt quick enough and the kick just happened to hit my fourth and fifth fingers on my left hand. Instantly the fingers snapped back and I couldnt control them anymore, the pain was pretty bad and there was a lot of bleeding. We went to the hospital and it turned out that both the fingers were dislocated. When the fourth one dislocated it pierced the skin and thats how the bleeding started. My fingers are back in place now, the nerves and tendons are ok too but the mobility sucks. I cant make a good fist anymore...in two weeks I'm probably going to get an operation if things dont get better. Has anyone had anything similar? Is there any way to get the mobility back? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm willing to try everything, I really want to be able to make a fist again.

If its gonna improve then most likely it'll just improve over time. I couldn't say whether surgery would help or not.

Hi Stash,
Sympathise with the fingers. I dislocated my pinkieplaying rugby once, and it hurts like stink. It will get better but it takes time, lot of fragile tissues there. The problemwith dislocation is that it's easier to do them a second time once they've happened. Take it slow. Get a Tennis ball and start squeezing it to build up the strength gradually when you feel ready to do it.
Good Luck.

To bad about the injury Stash.
I have dislocated a toe and a leg bone at the ankle, but nothing compaired to what you did.
These are tough injuries because ligaments & cartilage don't have a heavy blood flow system like bones & muscles do.
Advice: Warm injured area every evening & message as heavy as you can stand from wrist to finger tips. Use common sense here, and don't agravate your injury. But, helping your body to move pooled fluids will speed recovery. Exercise your whole hand up to the point of pain but not into pain several times a day.
Are you left handed or right handed?
I hope your back in the action soon...........David

The first thing to do is to be patient. Accept that it will take months to get right, that way you're less likely to get over-enthusiastic and prang it again. In the meantime though, as soon as the doctor says it safe to do so, keeping moving hand and fingers so that you can maintain and recover mobility.
I use an oil that an aromatherapist made up for me to help reduce soft tissue inflammation. Why don't you see if there's a local aromatherapist who can do the same for you.

Agreed Andy, crumpled pieces of paper first if the Tennis ball is too much!!
Earlier in the year I stopped a basketball coming straight down with only a straight pinkie
It looked like it had telescoped back into my hand, then the next day I had a full on cumberland sausage where my pinkie once was................ then it went black!!!
Thought the blighter was going to fall off!
I used my finger as an excuse to buy some play doh too and used that as a rehabilitation tool.
Man, Play-Do literally tanslated as "The Way of Play" RAWKS!

Errm, looong ago I dislocated my shoulder by eh... falling out of the back of a car (mad skills it took) I landed spread eagled on the ground and my handy dandy right shoulder that I love so much dislocated, boy was that fun. In regard to the "first times the worst" that's true in my case at least, nowadays I can practically pull it out of its socket, but it really doesn't affect me. no pain. so sit tight, and eat ice cream
