I've never hurt my knee before, but I'm still overweight and doing Tai Chi puts a lot more prolonged pressure on my knees. I felt fine after class this morning but I just got up about a half hour ago get something from downstairs and all the sudden it's like a sharp shooting pain through the middle of my knee on top, every step I take. There really isn't any pain unless I put weight on the knee.
Is the best solution to ice, elevate and take it easy for a few days? I'm not sure what I did. I think I did it while sitting here to be honest with you.

I suggest you go visit a doctor just in case something happend
after that gp visit a nutrition specialist so you can follow a diet and lose weight, that will reduce the pressure on the knees due to your overweight.
I hope that helped :)

24 lbs down, 97 to go.. Can't wait, but I can't make it go any faster. I'm already eating 200 cal less than I probably should be (dieting on a budget = lulz) And I would visit a doctor if I weren't 80 bucks in the hole and had health insurance, but we're all not that fortunate. I plan on visiting one in the near future, when I actually can pay him. Doctors like getting paid. So I'm just looking to treat the symptoms until I can get to one.

UPDATE OF EPIC LULZ:
Felt better after two days, but is still sore. Then after taiji yesterday the left one started hurting a bit most likely because of favoring the left leg for a few days. Everything hurt today and then, because god hates me, I fell down the stairs trying to move and, you guessed it, hit every stair with my bent left knee.
Now it hurts without moving or putting weight on it above the kneecap and on the back side of the joint.
Can't wait till Monday, I'm gonna storm my doctor's office.. insurance or not.

Hi Pezzle,
Sorry to hear that you hurt your knee; hope it's on the mend.
Just wanted to say that doing Tai Chi shouldn't hurt your knees. Your hips, knees and toes should be aligned and the knee shouldn't protrude over the toe. Also, if you are slightly overweight, don't stand in a low stance until you have been practising for a while. Hope you stick with Tai Chi, it's great.

I think the problem is when I try to turn my waist and foot when walking, I can feel pressure on the back knee (where the weight is) when I'm turning the front foot and waist so I can step through. Its like the twisting pressure is in the joint and not the waist and I haven't determined why this happens but I'll have to talk to Sifu about it. I think my foot is out-turned a little too much (more than 45 degrees), which Sifu tends to catch me doing from time to time.
The biggest thing is that I'm going too low right now, and doing too much for what my body can handle at the moment.

Hi Pezzle, when walking, it is important to open the kwa correctly. This way you are using the hip to step as opposed to actively move the leg.
Plus, as already stated, make sure your knee does not extend over your toes. A fellow student can check this for you.
Until your knees recover, temporarily keep your stances higher. Otherwise continued TaiJi practice will mean your knees don't get the chance to heal.
Good kuck with your training, Carys.
