I was just watching the 1st LOTR movie again and one of the parts with the Wraith(I think that what they are called; Im talking about the guys that ride the black horses and wear the black cloaks) came on and I realized that I have no idea who they are. So can somebody tell me who they are and what their purpose is in the story?? THANKS

THey are the nine kings of men who were corrupted by the rings of power they wore and became enslaved to the will of the one ring. They are undead.
Bit of a simple explanation ....but wait till white wizard wakes up and he'll fill in the bits i missed.
cheers

They are from the evil lands that opposed the onld kingdoms of Gondor. The one that stabs Frodo is the witch king of Angmar an enemy of Erador the other Good men kingdom.
They were offered the 9 rings of power by Sauron when he was able to show himself in human form. They killed many of their own people and finally slayed themselves to live an eternal life undead under the command of Sauron.
They are neither living nor dead technically but live in between worlds they can feel the power of the ring and are drawn towards it at all times.
Thats the basics
