I'd like to help but, I can't answer you before you clarify this.

"whats the difference between karate [like Tae-kwon-do] & kung fu?"

Karate is a seperate style to Tae kwon do.

Karate, and Tae Kwon Do, while seperate styles tend to have a 'harder' philosophy as it were, while many styles of Kung Fu are much more relaxed. However there are so many variations of all of them that it is impossible to simply sum them up.

If you're worried about your nose I recommend you avoid arts that encourage sparring, at least to start with, and those that go in for competition a lot. If you could either give a few more requirements here, or PM me with more detail of what you're looking for either I or someone else could probably help out.

Having read your location.
Just read the newspaper this morning and I was intrigued by a story from Iran. A woman, actualy several women have been arrested for dancing. I hope that you do not get arrested for practicing the martial arts, because kata , to the un-informed , looks a lot like dancing.

Merged two identical threads from Womens Self Defence, and Beginners section into one thread. Please don't make the same thread in multiple forum area's.

Thanks and Welcome to the boards

The nose should NOT be a problem. Just don't do sparring that allows punches and kicks to the face area
Most light and mod. contact sparring don't allow kicks and punches to the face. Some 'hardcore' schools, as they may cxall themselves, or by others, may allow this. This would also be a kickboxing school or a boxing(European) school.

karate styles, Okinawan, Goju-Ryu, Shojin-ryu, Shotokan, etc. they are all hard stirking styles that contain alot of self defense techniques as well as damaging technique. They often teach easy and general pressure points to hit to inflict max dam/ or max pain.

kung Fu, Wing Tsun, Animal gung Fu, Hsing-I, Ba Gua Chang etc: These are slight differnt, all are kung fu, but some are soft, some hard, some direct, so me circular fighting. If you look at kung fu, research the styles a bit, talk to the instructors of the school and ask them what youa re getting into.
