I dont know if this thread should be in the problems section or here. Anyways...
Whats the best way to train for an aerial cartwheel.I can do onehand cartwheels (using both opposite and front hand) and the splits both ways but cant do this move.It feels like im to slow doing it and have to put my hand out.
If anybody can help me or tell me how close i am, it would be great.

What's your MA? For as much as I rip on the capoeristas (and I really shouldn't since I'm part Portuguese) they have some amazing aerial moves. Take a few lessons at your local center and you'll be dance fighting with the best of them. When I used to break dance back in high school me and my friends took lessons for a while to add some MA flare to our dancing. But definately strengthen your abs, that'll help a lot.

If you can do a one handed cartwheel, you are well on your way. The key for you now is to focus on really whipping your legs over. A good regular cartwheel can almost been done lazily-- this is the opposite. You want to be at a point where all of your weight is being thrown laterally. When you get to a point where you do a one-handed cartwheel so fast that your hand is so light on the floor that it slides a little, you will be getting into aerial territory.

A word of caution is necessary--Use A Mat. If (when) you crash to the ground the first few times, make sure you tuck your head and roll over your lead shoulder. Did I mention to use a big, soft mat? Use a mat.

Good luck.

If you have the chance, spend some time with the local gymnastics club and let them know what you're looking to do. They usually have very good equipment and I'd suggest you do some time in a bungy to help. I always tend to round-off when doing cartwheel type moves (face the same way I came from by twisting in mid air).

Thanks guys, im thinking of joining a gymnastics club and maybe a wushu or capoerer (how ever you spell it) school as well.I used to break dance myself, got the basics like mindmill, headspin, a couple of flares, so this shouldnt be imposible for me.Just wandering should i practice the one hand cartwheel till its really, really fast?

Wushu dont really teach it, I mean those guys add it in there routine sometimes, but there piss poor teachers in teaching acrobatic. Capoeria got some neat stuff, but there aerial is side way completely, which is gay looking. Your best bet is to get some advice at a open gymnastic school, but then again gymnastic school tend to leand towards kids.... they dont give a rats crap about adult gymnastic. Anyway listen to Hwardo... he pretty much mention most of the step for aerial. Just drill 1 handed carwheel like a madman, till you can do it like an aerial with speed and height. Just commite and try it till you land them.... is really simple as that. Whip that legs over hard, and throw your hands around and back up to help you rotate better. Hurdling into it helps for beginnier, dont learn standing aerial. Master running aerial first. If you have a camcorder recording yourself also helps alot. Just go practice over and over till you land them now, and dont be a sissy. You wont land on your head and you wont died okay? Mats arent even necessary for aerials, cause if you get mats then you have to jumps extra high to land on a higher platform.

hwardo says it the best when he says that you have to whip your legs over. i have taken wushu for about 2 years now & it took quite a while to get an aerial cartwheel. you really have to get the feeling of floating over while whipping your legs over. when someone spots you, you should feel weightless to them & get a spring sensation & just go for it. believel me, you will have your share of falls. they can hurt too. good luck with your training.

Oooooh, so you fancy yourself a breakdancer huh? are you calling me out? we can battle if your down, just be prepared to get a platter full of your own @ss handed to you with all the trimmings...nah I'm just kidding, my windmill has porbably turned into a pinwheel by now, and as far as flare, well I have a flare for style (but not in that way), but I guess it really doesn't count. Anyway, best of luck with the fancy stuff. I wish I had the drive to commit to learn some flashy forms and high flying stuff. Sometimes when no one is looking I'll bust out wtih a butterfly kick when I'm walking through the park on the way to school. I throw down my back back like fifty nijas jumped out of nowhere and I let it fly and totally ruin their sh/t. Ofc ourse someoen is always looking...never fails.
