What do you want to do Martial Arts for?

I want to do martial arts for self discipline, while at the same time be able to effectively use it in a real self defense position. I have always loved the arts but was never able to take a class.

OK, Illinois is one heap big place.

Try using this search engine;

http://www.google.co.uk/

In the search box type in "Martial Arts"

Once you get those results, refine the search and type in "Illinois"and get reading.

It'll give you even more questions to ask here, which members will be happy to answer, and eventually uou'll find what you want!

Common question, common answer: check out whatever clubs are close to you and decide after trying them out which one suits you best. Most clubs will offer a free trial lesson or two.
Have a look in the different styles threads to see if one appeals to you and search online for different clubs.

Ive been searching online for awhile now which ultimately brought me to this site. And I have also been reading some of the beginners posts as well. There are many places for me to try. As a matter of fact, too many. I am looking for advice on which style to start with which would be best for me, given my physical attributes.
I have been reading about many, many different forms and hear all the pros and cons. Being as tall as I am, I thought maybe there would be certain styles that I am better suited for.

OK, well you could start by taking an art with a good stand up game like Muay Thai, or a good ground game like BJJ.

Alternatively you could look into MMA or Vale Tudo for a combination of both.

Which style would you suggest for a good efficient all around art. Standing and ground. Keeping in mind the ever important self defense. I am not wanting to learn for show or bragging rights, as what I see with tae Kwan Do.

Also, not knowing much at all of vale tudo, how does it compare to krav maga, or combat kalaki? Or are those two forms even taught in the US?
