Can anyone explain to me what is STEP SPARRING?

The way i understand it:
step sparring is when the attacker attacks a certain number of times, and the defender defends against those atacks ( moves out the way) then attacks back the same number of times.

1 step sparring-
attacker attacks, defender defends
defender attacks, attacker defends
ad infinitum.

2 step sparring-
attacker attacks, defender defends, attacker attacks, defender defends
defender attacks, attacker defends, defender attacks, attacker defends

ad infinitum.

the way i understand it anyway.
If i'm wrong please enlighten me.

if i am correct, then this would be good for working on combo's/ defence, but not good for counters.
i'm a newbie white belt- dont hurt me.

Almost right Qis, but in our club's association(UKTA/ITF style), the defender does counter(of their choice) after the attackers last move(in one step I belive its that the defender immadiately performs the counter after, or in conjunction with, the defence). Also the attacks are 'predefined'(well they are the way I have done it) so say in 3 step it's attacker 3 punches, defender 3 blocks etc, but in essence it's near enough there.

Step sparring is good for guaging distances and such, in a relatively more 'practicied' way than free sparring. I'm only just a TKD Green belt myself and I won't be surprised if someone will say my descriptiuon of step sparring is flawed in part(just sometimes I find it hard to describe!),but maybe then TigerAnsTKDLove you shall get a good explaination!

I'm curious that you have't seemd to do step sparring (or maybe thats just the way I interpert the question, so again I could be wrong! :D) as a green belt (by the way congrats on getting to green belt and good luck with the rest of your training), I know ( refering back to my club and association again) I started step sparring from yellow belt.

Anyway hope that helps in some way. :)

That exactly what it is. When someone punchs there is a set of moves done by the other person to defend themself. Most TKD school have these to start teaching their student how their movement are used

Most MAs use some form of step sparring to teach move combinations/ counter attacks, but teach it under a different label.

Oh yeah, step sparring is GREAT.[/sarcasm]

Any drill that makes you think of blocking a reverse punch with a crescent kick needs retooling.

Not wanting to be be picky..but

That is not the drills fault! The drill is sound. it's the applications of technique within the drill that is flawed.

By all means that particular technique is innappropraite but why blame the drill?

.... confront your school instructor and he will explain more fully.... (especially as how it is or isn't done at your school.

Two types of step-sparring are generally used in TKD training: three-step and one-step. In step sparring the attacker advances and the defender retreats. Sparring drills are designed to reflect the two possible strategies that may be used a fight. One is to simply attack, the other is to react to the opponent's movements and counter-attack before the opponent can complete his or her attack.

I can't imagine that you haven't already started one or 3-step sparring in your school !

Trent, look up the page. This is the Tae Kwon Do section of the forum.

You want to make observations about these drills, then start a thread in General discussion or the Vale Tudo section!

For people who think step sparring is boring or ineffective, check out this thread for ways to make it "not so boring":
