I started about 2 weeks ago @ a kickboxing school, hitting bags n stuff.

I feel like I'm punching and kicking like a girl. How do I get more power into my strikes?

It's ok,I won't take offence at that comment! :D

Simple answer? Practise! Make sure you are forming your fist properly first of all then you just need to keep training it. Make sure too that you are making contact in the right place, then keep training it!

I meant I hit like a school girl.. so what spot am I suppose to hit? Should I work on strengthning my stomach muscles?

BTW I think I posted this in the wrong forum. How do I move my thread to the kickboxing forum?

Dude with regards to your wrist hurting after heavy bag training, make sure you wrap your hands up nice and wear decent bag gloves or boxing gloves.

Go easy to start with, watch your senior fighters & look at the proper technique before going hell for leather on the bag.

Your brain is having to take lots of new info on board when you first start, so start off slow, as i said you want to make sure you are kicking and punching with proper form and technique before you can start putting some power behind your strikes. Once you have trained a while, your brain and central nervous system will adapt to the new movement & muscle memory, then you can start throwing with speed and power. In fact that happens naturally usually.

People could tell you on line about how to use technique to get more power, but you go training to be shown that, your paying someone to show you that already so make sure your getting proper instruction.

Just take it steady, gradually it will all click.

Yes, you need to train the whole of your body. That will help you greatly with your strikes and a whole lot of other things in time.

Just check out Crossfit, Rosstraining or Combat fitness websites.

Thanks for the great advice. I'll focus on form and techique first then.

as mentioned it will come with practice, you need to get the technique of using your whole body to generate power rather than just the limbs. Ask some of the senior members of your club for pointers as they will probably be able to check your form

You need to talk to your instructor about correct techniue. Think of the mechanics of a punch as a whole body movement. Its not only about your arms - you need correct positioning of the front foot and rear heel, correct movemnt of the legs, correct rotation of the hips and torque, and correct extension of the arms. All this come with practice, and should be worked on before you really start battering that bag.

OMG! I needs teh mo pow3r in teh s1rik3s!!!!!!!!!

Nah just kidding. :D

For starters there is nothing wrong with hitting like a girl. If there is anything wrong with it then go tell Laila Ali.

Its all about practice and with practice comes conditioning.

Don't worry about it, you'll get better. :)
