I'm thinking of studying a martial art but don't know which is right for me. I am 23 yrs. old, 5'8" 185 lbs, need to get into better shape but I have a natuarlly large muscular body frame. I have decent speed and have quite a bit of power in both my upper and lower body. I am looking for something that is for primarily self defense, using opponents body weight and energy aggainst them with a bit of ground combat, holds, throws, and quick precise attacks, I'm not really interested with the whole jumping around with a bunch of wasted movements. Anyway, any advice you can give me for a area of study?

Submission fighting / Vale Tudo sounds just up your "street" :D

Or a combination of BJJ and Muay Thai would work well.

I live near Tulsa, OK but don't think that there is a whole lot of different styles available here, mostly just the most common such as Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, etc. I was in the military for a bit and learned a little Ja Jit Su (not good at spelling).

Best advice; go have a look at all of the ones around your area and see what looks to be best from your point of view. We like it if you come back to us after that and give us your views and then we get a chance to all give our 2 cents.

Good hunting! :)
