Hey,
I've been doing Judo for about 6 months now, and up till about a week ago I have been incredibly happy with it. In fact, I'm still incredibly happy with it, but I am feeling kind of doubtful. I started speaking with someone who I really respect, who is skilled in Pa Kua (sp?), and became more and more interested in the animal/drunken stances. Now, I'm wondering if Judo is for me at all (I have never in my 17 years of existance been in a fight and I don't intend to compete in many tournys, I'm just one of those "I do martial arts for the fun" people). So what do you guys think, is this a passing phase I'm going through, do you know any credible places around the San Diego area that teach the animal/drunken stances, have any other comments you would like to mention? Thanks in advance for any help you're able to give.

Stick to the Judo mate. Or try www.royharris.com if you want to look at widening your experience.

Specter,

Something to consider as you research other systems. Those styles really are not about stances but rather about "mindsets/personas". Some arge that the more imporatant aspect of a system like "White Crane" is understanding the mindset and reactions of the system (not necessarily the crane/beak hand itself).

Stances are temporary positions that start and finish movements. You should never (even in form) hold a particular stance for very long (if at all).

Good luck in your persuits. And follow Yoda's advice and look into Roy Harris. One of his students teaches here in Rochester and based on what I've seen of this student, Roy must be one hell of an instructor.

Stick with the Judo a wee while longer, then try so other things. Find what your most comfortable/happy with and do that.
