Now that it's the new year I'd really like to get the ball rolling for MAP Meet 2008. For those of you who are new to the site, this is THE gathering for the UK members of MAP, and for anyone who happens to want to fly in from abroad too. We pick a venue, descend on it en masse, spend 4 hours or so training with a load of new people in a load of new martial arts, then we hit the bar afterwards.

Oh, and we donate everything we make to charity.

That's right, each year we pick a charity and donate a fairly large sum of money to them. this year we have chosen the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSHCC) as the recipient of our takings. As such, I'm going to ask the instructors to state whether they are willing to teach kids in an effort to make this year's event open to the young 'uns as well as us grown ups.

I'd like to use this thread to keep everyone updated as to the date, the schedule, the classes, the costs and any other information I feel you might need.

I've also asked Anth if he would kindly knock together an information page that should also contain the contents of this thread for easy reference. The page will essentially be an online advert, complete with downloadable posters (any volunteers to design one would be appreciated) and anyone is free to send the URL to as many people as they can.

One new feature this year will be the online payment page. We're going to be using a www.justgiving.com page to accept pre-payments for the event from anyone who wishes to use this system. Justgiving allows you to make your donations online via a secure server, and also allows any UK taxpayers to take advantage of Gift Aid, which essentially adds an additional 28% to your donation. A £15 entry fee therefore becomes £19.20, which costs you no more than paying on the door would. I'd really appreciate it if people used this system to pay, as it saves me a lot of effort in addition to the sizeable increase in donation amount!

Now, onto the details:

Of course you can come! The day is open to anyone who will pay the entry fee and abide by the simple rules I'm going to draw up at some point. Of course, anyone NOT abiding by the simple rules I draw up will be doing so in a room filled with experienced martial artists, so I don't envisage this being a problem, at least not for long!

Ok, first bit of bad news to report. Bracknell Leisure Centre is fully booked for the weekend I wanted, though they're free the following one. However, I picked the 28th of June because of 2 reasons: 1) it's after exams and such are over pretty much everywhere and 2) it's not in July, so people are more likely to still be around and not off on holidays.

As such, I'm not looking into alternative venues, so we may be leaving Bracknell this year. At the moment I'm sticking to venues within easy driving distance of my house (my event, my decision!), but will ensure that wherever I pick is within walking distance of a mainline rail station, and naturally there will be a free MAP taxi running between the train station and the venue for those too lazy to walk.

Please bear with me while I sort out details.

Just adding the following request:

If anyone has any contact with leisure centres, sports complexes or schools/universities with sports facilities in the Bracknell/Reading/Basingstoke type areas, could they contact me if they're willing to help out? I'm researching this myself still, but would very much welcome any inside contacts!

Would DART be more relevant for most people (i.e. those who do not do Karate)?

Jang Bong

I'm not sure that most people do not have karate or a related art in their history - even if they're not doing it now. ;)

Hi All,

I'm going to be instructing a session, it will be called "Bish Bash Bosh" and will be a hands on, fairly physical session.

At a guess I'll cover trapping, unbalancing, striking, take-downs, arm and neck breaks and some other fun stuff... By the way, we will probably take it a bit easy on the arm and neck breaks just in case anyone wants to do a session after mine :) :) :) :) :)

All the best.

Robert.

To follow on from this, I have an instructor from my jujutsu style who's happy to teach a simple ukemi class for those who have never learned how to fall correctly before. I may or may not be helping her out on the day if numbers warrant.

Is this an idea that people are interested in, as it will take up a slot that could otherwise be used for hurting other people instead of falling over ;)

I remember learning breakfalls, most people have an overwhelming aversion to falling face first towards the ground. I always found sneaking up behind them and pushing them to be an effective learning aid ;)

And?

Just because you are in a relationship with someone, doesn't mean you stop thinking other people are attractive (even if they happen to live with your girlfriend!)

Go on, admit it, you think she's a smokin' hottie....

(I'm still not entirely sure I know who this person is, so she could or could not, actually be attractive...)

Do we have a location yet?
I've been extremely busy of late, what with handing in my notice and therefore being inundated with long but boring tasks that no-one else wants to do. However, I have a week and a half between finishing my current job and starting my new one, so I should have more than enough time to find us a venue then.

I've also had some suggestions from MAPpers aiming to help out, so the venue will hopefully be finalised before too long.

Until then, thanks for being patient!

Great news that it's on again - I thought it was excellent last year.
My only gripe was that there were sessions that I couldn't fit in!

Bracknell is my preferred venue, as it's just down the road from our house...

FYI, I don't think he'd done it by the last MAP meet, but Daniel, son of prowla #1 (who was there last year) got his black belt in July, and so did Bradley, son of prowla #2 (he is still a bit young to come); Matthew, son of prowla #3 is going for his 1st kyu next month (and he is definitely too young to come).

Ok, some good news at last!

The venue has now been provisionally booked, so providing I don't mess up the payment or anything, we have somewhere to train!

I've gone with Bracknell again because they're in a convenient location and tend to look after us quite nicely. We're going to be going for the 30th August (Saturday) and currently have the hall booked from 10-4 (I may extend this to 5 to give us enough time to clear the room afterwards, depending on a few things).

So, to clarify, the date is now 30th of August, and the venue is the Bracknell 3M hall.

Ill be coming with my Judoka lass :), it was awesome last year so it should be a good day and lord be praised i dont think those hard metal training knives will be there (painfull toys of the devil that they are :P)!

Just wondering, would it be any sort of a good idea to have a spot open for friendly competitions, i know it could be quite a planning nightmare due to space and time, but say for £3 entrance fee or somesuch it might be quite a good revenue raiser for the charity, especially if split into grappling and friendly semi contact striking (i imagine full contact would be too much of a hard thing to keep friendly and on the mat space.

just a random thought.

It's a good thought, but I don't personally want to have to take out the additional insurance I'd need to have in place if we wanted to put on a competition as well as a seminar. I'm fairly sure the added cost would be horrendous!

There was some interest in a breakfall session? Is that still a runner? If you havent got anyone for it I can throw my hat in the ring? I can split the session into a bit of Ukemi and then a bit of ground hitting skills and drills. Focusing on how to hit/fall to the floor and have a fair chance of not damaging yourself to such an extent that you cant fight back.
Please give me a ya or a ney.

More than happy to have you if you'd like to teach. If you send a PM to Hippolyta with your details, we'll give you a slot.

If anyone else would like to volunteer to teach, that's pretty much the way to go about it. I'd be particularly interested in stuff that we don't tend to see a lot of at MAP Meets: interesting weapons, rare styles, Brazilian Jujutsu (we seem to have difficulty finding instructors who want to do a session or a demonstration of that). However, I'll accept anyone as a potential instructor who has insurance and something to teach.

Just remember that it should be basic enough for me to do (i.e. pretty basic) and ideally open for kids to join in, though I'm happy for a few of the classes to be 18+ if instructors just don't want to show kids some of their tricks.

Not if I'm teaching Heian Flow System. I am happy to do that again as my last two classes (HFS and SPEAR System Basics) were not positioned in such a way as to give good audience exposure.

If you can find a licensed instructor with insurance who is willing to teach some wrestling moves, I reckon that would make for a very interesting class. I'd certainly be more than happy to include that, but I obviously have to insist on the insurance before I can agree!

He has agreed to teach BUT he will confirm with me on Monday 14th July. As he is due back from holiday either the day before the meet or the early morning of the meet.
However he is keen to run 2 or 3 sessions but I am not certain if that is possible.
Therefore can I confirm ASAP the following:

1. Are you able to confirm how many sessions he can run?
2. Would you like to go firm on timings ONCE I have confirmed he can attend as he would still like to do teach even if he gets back from hols in the morning he is aware it is at Bracknell so he could do a lunchtime/afternoon session.

That sounds fantastic! Ideally we'd like instructors to run a taster session each, but we may look for some to teach an additional class if we end up with excess capacity. As far as the timings go, I will try my best to accommodate any requests for specific slots, though I can't promise everyone will get their first choice (especially if everyone wants the 11am slot!)

Hi Everyone,

I too am willing to teach two sessions if required - one as advertised on 'Bsh Bash Bosh' and maybe one on Tai Chi - although as I am advancing in years and not quite as quick as I used to be, I would appreciate it if the two sessions were in different time-slots :) :) :) :) :)

For those that may be interested - the 'Bish Bash Bosh' content will come primarily from some work I have been doing which looks at the sort of defence that elderly people need to employ when attacked by younger and fitter thugs. It is no good going toe-to-toe or fighting fair - you have to put your attacker down HARD, FAST and reasonably permanently. Note that although the techniques come from this background, I will spice them up (for the younger or the fitter) with some of the dastardly moves (isn't that a great word *** DASTADLY ***) that I have been learning at the Ju-jitsu class I have been attending...

Looking forward to learning and sharing.

All the best.

Robert.

We currently have 8 confirmed instructors with replies pending from a further 4. I'll update the first post in the thread when I get anything further from those 4, and I have updated it tonight so that it shows the current line up. If we only have 3 teaching areas, then we're pretty much up to the right number of instructors, though I also plan on getting some reserves from my own style to teach some entertaining basic techniques and/or breakfalling.

So basically, I'm hoping we're pretty much up to full capacity without needing to double up, but there's the possibility of doing so with you die-hards who just can't resist being instructors in multiple styles!

In other news, I'm paying for the hall tomorrow so start publicising the event within your own clubs and drumming up some enthusiasm! Five and a half weeks and counting!

If it kicks off at 11.00am depending on the turn around times and a lunch break your are going to have a 4 to 5 hr block x 3 mats an hour gives you a 15 mats for 5hrs. Or 12 mats for 4hrs which realistically is about right with a finish at around 4pmish for cuppa before we all bomb burst to the corners of the empire some of us by public transport which is one trial Kwai Chang Caine never had.
My fag pack maths makes that min. of 12 instructors or 15 for major ambition for 5hrs. If there is some doubling up some will be teaching for around well work it out for yourselves.
The only problem I foresee like a clairvoyant who couldn’t appear that day due to unforeseen circumstances is the variety but as most have more than one string on their cello it will be tight but I think it will be alright on the night. The main effort now is bums on mats and rattle the tin and cry Harry, England and St George or words to that effect. Even thou HMS Great Britain has hit the Iceberg recession and is taking on water it would be great if we can raise at least a grand.

I have sopke to Dougie the Wrestling coach and he can attend. However he has a shift in the late afternoon so would prefere 2 x slots 11.00 to 12.00 then 12.00 to 13.00hrs. I have enclosed some blurb below for any advertsing if you see what I mean.

Douglas ‘Dougie’ Thomson is an excellent wrestler and Olympic coach and he was UK heavy weight champion in 1996/97. He has wrestled in Olympic World championships all over the world. A former Great Britain Olympic team captain who retired at the end of the Commonwealth games in 2002. He is a coach of coaches.
He co teaches at the very successful Tokei Wrestling club at London Bridge.
He is no stranger to the Martial Arts world as with the advent of MMA
the club has attracted over the years many Martial Artists and MMA fighters from all over London who he trains in ground and Wrestling skills.

We're aiming to use 12 slots in total, with 2 matted and 1 unmatted area. If possible I'd still like to see a different instructor teaching in each slot, but the ones that have offered to double up will obviously be asked to do something different in each session.

All in all, it should still be a fun-filled and varied day of training for everyone.

One new feature this year will be the online payment page. We're going to be using a www.justgiving.com (http://www.justgiving.com) page to accept pre-payments for the event from anyone who wishes to use this system.

Can you confirm where the Justgiving web page is please as I paid towards this and wanted to see if anyone else had and was using it ok? Ta :)

Aegis,
I have sopke to Dougie the Wrestling coach and he can attend.

Dougie is a big man with some excellent skills ...

Folks a session not to miss

My fag pack maths makes that min. of 12 instructors or 15 for major ambition for 5hrs.

The usual in the past has been 12 instructors across 3 mats. With choices sometimes of lunch OR demonstrations  the time vanishes very quickly without trying to be ambitious.

The only problem I foresee like a clairvoyant who couldn’t appear that day due to unforeseen circumstances is the variety but as most have more than one string on their cello it will be tight but I think it will be alright on the night.

The problem I have (when I can get to these events) is having 4 time slots and wanting to try 7 different things :bang: Variety has never been a problem.

My attendance is now looking doubtful  due to money issues. It is a LONG way down there. If I can twist a way of making it a 'working weekend' and getting someone else to fund my transport then I will

Please note that the "Event Date" marker is currently incorrect, but all the other dates on the page are fine. I've contacted JustGiving to amend this oversight and to extend the life of the page to allow retrospective donations if we don't meet our target fundraising amount.

Currently Mel is the only one listed as turning up, would anyone else like to commit themselves to a fun day out?

Indeed! Even with a prompt 11am start the timings will be tight. Realistically the second session will finish at around 1:15, and the afternoon needs to be pretty much wound up at 4, so time will be tight. However, I still intend to have about 30 minutes available for lunch/demonstration in the middle.

The problem I have (when I can get to these events) is having 4 time slots and wanting to try 7 different things :bang: Variety has never been a problem.

I agree completely. Every year I've gone, I've wished I could be in two places at once!

Ok, I will rephrase the question. Is anyone coming from elsewhere that will be staying in either London or Bracknell after the Meet, as it will be impossible for me to get back to Norwich until Sunday. Failing that, before it? I might make it two nights.

PS - It looks like I'll be either staying in Kings Cross or Paddington areas. Gotta love travelodge...

Without checking prices I can't be certain, but I imagine you would find Bracknell's prices a little lower than any near Paddington or Kings Cross. I'd also have to second Fishy's advice that if you must pick between them, Paddington is a lot less dodgy!

Start time is 11, end time is about 3:30 on the off chance everything runs on time.

We think we have enough instructors that everyone's only teaching one session, we're just waiting for one more confirmation then we'll send a provisional schedule to all the instructors

Indeed. The idea of kids is more down to the age of 12 than near-adults, though obviously it's down to the individual instructors as to whether they want to make it 18+ or not.

Lucy and I are making sure that there's a fully open (age-wise) class during every session, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Either Paddington or Waterloo look like the best options. Both run every 30 mins and have a journey time of 1 hour.

There is also a coach that goes from London to Bracknell: http://www.rainbowfares.com/timetables/glsat.htm

Brixtonbodunwel
11-Aug-2008, 09:09 PM
I don’t think Paddington has direct trains to Bracknell (I think a change at Reading with a 15min wait). Direct trains are 2 an hour from Waterloo both journey times about the same (roughly just over an hour).
I though I add in the Tube travel to give you a clearer picture.
If Waterloo; from Kings X get south bound Victoria change at Warren st for South bound Northern line get off 6 short stops later at Waterloo.
Don’t change at Euston for South bound Northern cause if you get the wrong south bound Northern that goes via Bank you will end up no where near Waterloo!
Your waste time working out how you messed ended up in South London meeting entertaining characters and clubbers in various states of undress or distress heading home or to someone’s else’s home. Then working out where you are and how to get to Waterloo.
If your on the Bank train changing at Elephant Castle or Kennington are both nightmare stations for that; combined with the subterranean life that lives down their it will make for an interesting wait for your freedom ride out.
The choice really is do you want a direct tube journey to Paddington then a train change with wait at Reading. Or a bit longer tube change at Warren st and a direct train from Waterloo?

Brixtonbodunwel

If you’re a Londonite or staying in London Waterloo is probably your best bet as the trains run direct every 20 & 50 past the hour journey time about 1hr. goes via Clapham Junction then a few others on its way to Bracknell.
If you are feeding in via South East London one might be best to get a Charing train or get to London Bridge and get on the Charing X train as the next stop is Waterloo East followed by a 1 min walk and you’re in the main line Waterloo stn for your next leg.
For some strange reason the tube system appears not to have any major line closures on the 30th. But as always check the website and be prepared for that signal failure i.e. always have a plan a B. However getting to Waterloo that’s not normally too much of a problem as it is very well served by a number of different tube lines, buses, trains (From the South East).
South West trains have no planned engineering works on the direct Waterloo Bracknell line but check if your are feeding into Clapham Junction etc.Check their website
Once you’re at Bracknell then from memory it’s a fairly pleasant quick or even slow (depending on your pace) 10 min walk to the centre. I think a bus goes from the Bracknell train station to the sports centre for that I have no further details. Best of british etc

(If you believe that, then I have some prime real estate opportunities in Louisiana that I want to chat to you about)

Oh, in case anyone wants to know what I am going to be teaching - since 'Bish Bash Bosh' is a tad vague...

Assume a bigger uglier vicious attacker (Like JWT - but not THAT ugly) and half a dozen of his big mates are a couple of hundred yards away and running towards you - not a lot of time and NO time at all for anything that is pretty, friendly, politically correct or likely to do anything less than ensure that his mates think twice before chasing you...

Like 'Slash and Gore' movies - but not quite that friendly :)
