about 7 weeks ago I was playing rubber guard, I went for the jui claw when I was cold. To cut a long story short I heard two pops. Been to see a good physio who recommended an MRI scan which confirmed a severe grade two rupture and slight instability within the joint, no cartiledge damage thank god. I have been advised to not roll against a resisting partner in mma/jujitsu for 3 months. Gutted although I can still roll I don't want to damage it to a grade three which equals surgery.
My question is has anybody else had this injury and how are you now?
(The LCL is the lateral collateral ligament which is on the outside of your knee)
Thanks

I had a reasonably bad knee injury ten years ago while transitioning from Crossbody to my knees. (I shrimped created space and came to one knee and then tried to put the other down while going for a single leg) The Knee just got stuck in the transition as we were rolling and popped. So I did not roll hard for about three months, wore a leg brace and worked on technique and took Glucosamine all with my doctor's approval and then started rolling lightly in three months and by six months I was out of the big brace and into a lighter brace and by a year the brace was gone. Everything was perfect by then. Listen to your doctor and rest. That would be your best bet. Then go real slow.

thanks for the response that makes me feel better about my injury. What does glucosemine do, does it help with ligaments?
Also would you say your knee was 90% as strong as before after 6 months, that's what my consultant and physio have said but what did you achieve
Thanks

You would be surprised at what you can do with a tear... I had a patient with a ?ruptured achilles .. when he came in he could do full heel raises on the ruptured achilles... seems he had two whisps holding things together.... surgeon said not to worry... if it ruptures then surgery is indicated... if not then get on with it.
Just remember that a grade 2 tear is only a partial tear/stretching of a ligament and not really as bad as it sounds in some ways... sure it needs to heal but you should be able to go back to life pretty well as normal unless there are complications... and these might be affected by something silly and not by rolling at all... get lots of info before you give up.

By six month's I was rolling at least six day's a week two hours a pop. (hardcore rolling after technique training the kind where you can hardly drive a car afterwards and powerade was necessary  ) I still had to wear a light brace for those last six months up to that year mark where I put it aside and have never worn it again. Follow your doctor's order's and rest until cleared and then see what happens.

thanks for the advice guys, just going to take it easy foe the next 3-6 months, going to have some personal training with my instructor (drilling etc)
just to keep things fresh. may try some light rolling soon.
I dont think i have a really bad injury, won bronze medal in a gi comp 10 days after it but could not play rubber guard at all, 50% of my game had gone due to the injury but just want to get it sorted so i dont have it for a long time.
my worry is it could go to a grade 3 if i dont give it time, dont think i would have done the comp if i knew what i had done, but glad i did.
cheers

Never went to the doc, but 'sprained' my knees repeatedly doing hapkido until it finally forced me out of the art. Knees have never been the same. I think part of the outcome depends on age and rehab, and also training with an instructor/partners who understand the dangers of training that particular art. This includes allowing you to modify your workout if necessary.

my injury to my left lcl has improved alot over the last two - three weeks, i even had a light roll with my instructor last night, felt strong no pain etc.
the strange thing is my right leg is showing signs of this injury aswell, i injured my left when i used rubber guard when cold. but i have never used rubber guard on my right leg, i think i have injured it putting a triangle on.
my question is has anybody else injured their lcl or lower outside calf muscle putting triangles on and the partner fights to get out of them. my legs are a bit skinny etc
its not a bad injury just annoying i.e i can still walk run roll light etc.

That is a really good site, lots of information. It's even got my problem on there (born without ACL).
