what is choy lay fut? i heard it was
Quote:Choy Lay Fut was originally developed as a secret, emergency combat style of Kung Fu used during the turbulent periods of civil war in China. Choy Lay Fut stresses fast and powerful stance transition coordinated with devastating combinations of smashing-swing fists, punches, animal strikes, kicks, grabs, and throws. Considered as a Southern Style Chinese Kung Fu system, Choy Lay Fut offers the benefits of Northern Kung Fu style footwork, sweeps and kicking techniques coupled with Southern style’s strong, over powering hand techniques. It contains open hand and palm strikes developed by the Chinese Monks, and Shaolin animal techniques such as the tiger, dragon, snake, crane and leopard.
What makes Choy Lay Fut one of the most popular styles in China is the diversity in the training
unquote:

is this exactly true? because it seems lyk one of the most balanced martial art ive ever heard of ( and i dont think that is true about it being the most balanced)

I am just a beginner of Choy Ley Fut (Bak Sing branch). However, I have taken Northern and Southern styles before so I can say that it does use both Northern legs and Southern hands.

Right now, as a beginner, I'm learning more long stances, big arm movements. So more northern stuff. However, I have seen the techniques my sihengs use and they resemble the hand techniques of the Southern White crane I studied.

Yeah, Bak Sing is also choi ley fut .. I think the other major line is Hung sing? <-- might be wrong on this name.

If u look at the history .. :) .. There is Chan Heung (sp?)'s lineage, (Hung Sing) then there is Tam Sam's lineage (Bak Sing) which mixed with Ku Yu Cheung's lineage when they exchanged senior students.

My sifu's line is acutally FROM Master Ku's linage. Or so I'm told anyhow :)

How many lessons for Choy Ley Fut? *shrug* .. not a very long time. I wish I could take more lessons .. too far away! :(

There are three major branches of Choi Lee Fut, your branch Buk Sing and there are two branches called Hung Sing. One branch of Hung Sing(Strong Winning) can trace its lineage to Koon-Pak(Chan Heung's Son) and is by far the largest branch in the world, and the second Hung Sing(Goose Winning) aka Fut San Hung Sing can trace its lineage to Jeong Yim a top disicple of the founder Chan Heung.

CLF is in some very basic respects similar to Hung Gar ( i think we even share soem forms).

BUt as already stated , by many CLF is is seen to combine teh "northen legs and southern fists" While alot of other style of CMA Use linear puching pattterns, CLF uses more "sweeping" arem and leg movements..

(I don't do CLF. Just from what i've read in books and been told by a few CLF practicioners)

Sub Zero is correct we do use mostly long circular techniques(at least when you first start learning the style), and the linear/straight punching is mostly charp choi's (Panther fist strikes).

One form Choi Lee Fut has that I think originated from Hung Gar is Gung Gee **** Fu Kuen. Not all branches teach this form.

Yeh.

G/Kung Gee **** fu or taming the tiger.

Thanks for clearing that up.
