Well I think its safe to say its been made and released I watched it 2 days ago on a DVD. It was actually on a double disc with Shanghai Knights(!) so I imagine its been out for a good while at least if its being put on double DVD's... that said I just had a look on the internet and it does seem somewhat hard to get hold off, (it seems its being released in the cinemas in America soon!) but Id say its really, really worth it. Its got a lot of really decent Kung Fu actors in it (Donnie Yen, Zhang Ziyi etc.) and while the choreography isn't the best I've ever seen- it is some of the most visually impressive. And thats basically something that runs through the entire film its split up into scenes which all have a specific colour theme- a black one, a red one, a blue one, a green one and a white one if I remember correctly, and the imagery and camera work in the film is just really, really excellent. The stories actually interesting as well with just enough twists and as long as you dont mind wirework and some ridiculousness then you'll really enjoy it. Its now one of my favourite Kung Fu films :D (Oh and it had a huge budget- for a Kung Fu film anyway)...

I love this movie. I would have to say it's not only my favorite Martial Arts movie, but my favorite movie FULLSTOP.
It was orignally released late 2002.
I've had it for a few months. I have the original uncut, 2 Disk Special Edition Chinese release version.
I specially ordered it from Hong Kong, and it's always in my DVD player :D.
It's a shame that you can't get it anywhere else. Mirramax (Disney) have bought the distribution rights to it. And they have suspened all sales of the film, even on online stores. So if you see it for sale, they are selling it illegaly :(.
Plus they are chopping the original film to pieces for a supposed cinematic release. But who knows when they are going to let it out.
Jet Li
Donnie Yen
Tony Leung
Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk
And the Beautiful Zhang Ziyi
Directed by Zhang Yimou
If you ever get the chance to see or get this film, grab it. It's a masterpiece.

This is the same one that I have:
http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID.527861/qx/details.htm
I bought mine off a 'contact' I know here in Australia.
If you like can try get a copy for you? Or maybe pass on your email?
It's region 3. So you'll either need a Region 3 DVD player, or one that plays multi-region.

Go grab a vcd verison in chinese vcd store and they should have it, but most likely no english subtitles:P The first fight between Donnie Yen vs Jet Li (spear vs straight sword) is a must see. The rest of the movie I didnt care all that much after, but still worth seeing just for that first fight. So go buy it:P

just to add - an excellent film. now that I am doing weapons forms in class, this film is quite an inspiration. It is also a really beautiful film to watch. The scenery and colour themes are really breathtaking. and it has a really interesting story.

It is a pretty stunning film. I managed to get a copy of it via P2P, but I think I'm going to buy a copy when I go over the Hong Kong next month. The Jet Li/Donnie Yen fight is great. I think they are great martial arts actors. Donnie Yen is definitely underrated.
The film is a lot more artistic than Crouching Tiger, but its still good.

It's a great movie, I finally got to watch my DVD :)
Every shot looks like a painting. Freakin BEAUTIFUL movie!
It's all weapons, no empty hand fighting (so I was alittel disappointed). Very little wire work, which is good.
Fast, fast fights, well planned. Especially during the many vs 1 fights - at no point do I think "why doesn't that guy hit him from behind"...
All my DVD menu options are in Chinese but after 10 minutes of experimenting I now know that the 4th selection down on the 3rd menu from the right means "show english subtitles".

That Donnie Yen Vs Jet Li fight is nothing short of amazing. The execution was flawless. I picked up a copy of it from a place just under China Books in Haymarket for about $30, but your dvd player has to be multi region (easy fix).
The good news is that we may be lucky because there is talk of releasing it into Australian cinemas in April, which would be awesome.
