I've recently been able to get my hooks to hit head level, and now i'm wondering if the starting position is a side or round kick?
PS.- not to bad for a self learner :p

I've heard the hook kick being described as a poorly-aimed front or side kick (which makes it an effective kick because of this deceiving movement), but then strikes the opponent when he least expects it angling towards him.
Remember to retract the kicking knee, and strike with the heel.

so the striking foot should remain stiff throughout the entire move?

... strike with heel , foot flexed with toes pulled back ... your foot does move somewhat so I am not sure what you mean by "stiff"

doesn't matter stance or starting positions. u should be able to do it from any position...
if it's TKD u r talking about then stiffness ain't part of it...
relax n easy movement makes kick faster n powerful.

Should preceed it with which MA you're practicing Hook Kicks for.
Even if it is pretty obvious this post isn't taking about Wing Chun hook kicks, other styles might have techniques of the same name and give you 'incorrect' advice.

The hook kick is a very impressive kick...but I have never been able to master the flexibility to do it head high. I am a late comer to MA...first enrolled at 33. While it makes no sense - I could do a decent head-high round kick and a very good crescent kick...but that darn hook kick...I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Never above the waist :P
It's the Hook Kick thats taught as part of Wing Chun Kung Fu.
As opposed to the Hook Kick in say, Tae Kwon Do.
Same name, different technique.

so its the same motion but its only target is the middle region?

It may be the same motion, it may be a similar motion, I don't know much about Tae Kwon Do Hook Kicks.
We really are OT, why doesn't some-one post a link to a video of TKD Hook kicks/description of the technique?
If needed, I'll try and do the same for Wing Chun Hook Kicks. I've gotta go to work right no, so it will be later.
And our starting position is our basic stance.

Hook-kick can be done with front ways and turn back way like spin kick, actually there both are exactly the same depend how you put it. A hook-kick is a side kick, but the impact is when you bring your kick back.

yeah, I was shown that it's sort of like a reverse side kick, but the leg is extended and pulls in, your aim is to hook them behind the knee/shin with your heel.
That was how I was shown to do hook kicks in TKD anyway.

I prefer to load like a normal side kick. Then they don't know what will happen. However you like it, though.
You can also use the toe/ball area of your foot in a hook kick to deliver more of a 'slap'. Kind of a 'leave before I have to really do something' gesture.
