Jax - the gyms in the UK cater 80% for cardio bunnies and 35yr old soccer moms.

most gyms in the UK are franchised where they are short on space and therefore have to cater for the market where they earn the most money from, so they cram as many cardio machines in as possible.

The second consideration is weight machines so an entire product line of machines is lined up, weights usually max out at 100kg (220lbs).

The final consideration is the free weight area, chrome dumbbells are the first purchase followed by a dumbbell rack ranging from 2kg to 40kg, dumbbells after that are a rare sight (i have a pair of 50's [110lb'rs] in my gym but too much of a leap).

If your lucky you get a free weight bench in a power rack along with a complimentary smith rack... throw in 1-3 benches and thats it...

bodybuilding/powerlifting gyms cater for a niche market and therefore a rare sight...

in america you have huge warehouse sized gyms like golds, worlds etc... no chance here sadly

and with the warehouse gyms you have the egotistical idiots and the wannabe bodybuilders who will take massive supplemental stacks and crap and who grunt and yell and do all they can to do half a squat or half a leg press and then tell you not to do this or not to do that or to do this or to do that cuz blah blah blah.....i prefer the gym @ my church thats very basic, i don't have to deal w/ the idiots giving my horrible advice or anything like that. basic is better IMO cuz people who are "hardcore" stay way from these and i can work out in peace.

care to explain as to why supplements are bad?
I'm full ears....

bodybuilder wannabe's? MAP is filled with people who started martial arts because they want to be uber sword skilled like frikin Jedi's or Bruce Lee.
Whats different to any wannabe? Lets have a look at your goals in life so we can poke fun and turn a screw or two.

Pull yer head out yer ass....

who grunt and yell

drop the beans cans you lift and pick up a real weight and lets hear you stay quiet. But then again... benching 60kg allows you to merrily hum and whistle to the Backstreet Boys on your MP3 player....
C'mon, Nicks about to do a solo, pipe up now, 5,6,7,8

and do all they can to do half a squat or half a leg press and then tell you not to do this or not to do that or to do this or to do that cuz blah blah blah.....

every gym has ass h0les, you sound like one type i call the 'PTA group', people who tut and mutter under they're breathe about how things are truelly awful.

Ignore them and carry on doing things your own way, people probably try and break you off a piece of info for a reason. Rack curling?

Define hardcore.....

i just mean by supp stacks i mean guys that freakin take hundreds and hundreds of dollars in supps and crap cuz they don't wanna put forth the effort, or the kind of people who grunt just go get your attention because you see them and know they can do much more but have no weight on the bar(yes my gym has some of those and its freakin annoying cuz i don't have an ipod and i can't afford it) and these same people after they grunt and yell will have 10 min conversations and tie up the equipment forever and i ask if i can work in between their sets cuz they are talking and they get an attitude w/ me.......and i do not consider myself hardcore as in bein in the gym for 2 hrs 5-7 days a week and taking my shirt off and posing in front of a mirror all day....i like to get in and get out, keep the weights heavy and on a good weight training day w/ an emptier gym get out in about 45 mins to an hr and 15 mins depending on what my routine is for that day and on HIIT days get in and get out in 20 mins. and from what i understand hardcore being in the BB world means workin out for like 2 hrs 5 days a week(as noted above) and doing bodypart isolation stuff, or at least thats what its turning into here...

i really wouldn't mind it all that much like i said if they were actually moving weights that are heavy and stuff, but its annoying having to wait forever for the guy having the conversation w/ the girl behind the counter or the girl in the elliptical or the guy that shoots off every pose in the book in front of the mirror in between sets.

really man, i respect you and your knowledge of the training and from most of your posts i can tell you aren't one of these that i despise and you've given alot of knowledge here that i've been able to practically take to use, and i know i coulda wrote it more clearly for people to understand, but i have a lil less respect for you as a person for blowin up like that.

hope that clears up what i mean.

the reason i blew up is because you made wide generalisations, based people on stereotypes and put yourself forth as being on a higher plane.

Stick to your own training, if your gym is not matching your ideal then move... i've moved gyms 4 times (and i'm thinking of upping sticks again) as the gym rats there were not making a good atmosphere for MY training.
Its called life, you seem like the square peg trying to fit into the round hole at that gym when you say its turning into a bodybuilding gym.
Its your money and your time.... use them both wisely

If i was to mouth off about ninja wannabe's in white pyjammas yelling and stuff i would be jumped on by the people who take their stuff seriously.... no difference here in these forums IMO.
Although the stereotype might be true for some people, it generally offends the other 90% of people who do take things seriously in their training.

Think about it

I've split this thread to avoid derailing the previous one.

Carry on (but keep it above the belt) . . .
