One of my housemates (who generally knows his stuff on matters of weights) recommended the clean and press as a big part of a strengthening routine. I don't think I've ever seen it recommended on here - is this because it's not useful or there are more useful exercises?
What are the pros and cons of the clean and press?

i like clean and press and clean and jerk. clean and press is gonna require explosive strength in the hips and legs and strength as you would need for military or overhead presses, and the clean and jerk is gonna require explosive strength in both movements, its just gonna be a lil diff how you would execute the explosive strength to be an olympic style jerk. if you have correct form w/ both the clean and jerk, you should be able to throw anything that you get to your chest over your head, whereas in the clean and press, its restricted to your OH press strength. i love both of them altho i can't do them anymore as i think it'd be dangerous for me w/ my ACL and i don't do any sort of heavy OH press cuz i've got a slight tear in both my labrums. if you decide to do it, you really need to get a knowledgable person to show you form to prevent injuries.

Ive heard it recommended numerous times. Strange. I love cleans, really feel it in my shoulders. And for pressing and jerking, love em both.

one of the reason they are not done much here in the us...they are real big in the eastern block countries...ist a real techniqual lift.
walk into gym for the first time and mr spandex pants peronsal trainer doesnt know how to do them....so how do you learn
few quallified coachs
but go to any d1 football program...they do them for days.
want to dunk....do cleans.....all the olimpic guys can jump out the gym...even the fat ones

"Useful" is always a relative term. Is a rear naked choke useful? What if the opponent is three feet away? Because the clean and press is technically two exercises put together, we can get more versatility out of using them separately in most cases.
What are the pros and cons of the clean and press?
Pros
- Works the entire body with one lift. More than the deadlift. More than the squat. More than pull-ups or pistols or push-ups. One exercise...everything gets hit.
- Can be used for either strength/power training or cardio training. 6x2 and 2x15 are both killer schemes for the clean and press, but for different reasons.
Cons
- Works the entire body with one lift. (See what I just did here ;) ) It's difficult to train the clean and press hard and then do significant accessory working the same session.
- There can be a learning curve, if using the full squat version. Because it's such a big movement, it takes some attention to technique. A power (or hang) clean and press would bypass this "problem" somewhat.
- Because it requires a high speed of execution, it doesn't allow for heavy loads, compared to relatively "smaller" exercises like deadlifts or squats.

What's the difference between 'clean and press' and 'clean and jerk'?!
Anyone got any gif. images or pictures of the clean and press technique?
