hey guys i'm currently in TKD and my teacher teaches us hapkido on some occasions and he has told me that it is the way of escaping and has told us how to get out of stuff like bear hugs and holds and stuff like that. Know i've also heard that hapkido is a actual style like TKD or kung fu. Am i thinking of a different style or is my teacher totally wrong? Well thanks for answers

Hapkido is its own style. Its not only a way to escape something, he/she seems to have phrased it as a set of techniques in TKD. From what I've seen cross-training between TKD and Hapkido is fairly common, he or shes probably trained in it

There is tons of information on the internet out there, I suggest doing a search and reading some of the other threads on here. There are also a couple of threads on here about learning Hapkido from TKD schools that you should probably read:

Anyway, Hapkido translates as "The Way of Coordinated Power." It is very much it's own style and it is a fairly complete martial art containing punching, striking, kicking, joint locks, ground fighting, weapons techniques, and the mental and health benefits of meditation, acupressure, and the development of ki. It has it's own theories and philosophys (which are very much different than TKD).
I'm glad that you decided to do some research on the subject.

For a decent article on Hapkido go here:

This will tell you most of what you need to know about it, although obviously experiencing it first hand will give you the best knowledge on the subject.

That's interesting. My instructor told us that "hapkido" means "The Art of Combined Power." Now I'm not sure which is actually correct. I'm going to have to look it up, I guess. (By the way, my instructor teaches TKD and hapkido.)

In Korean, "Do" may be translated as "mind", "art", "path", or "way". It usually includes a philosophical bent, so the "way of the sword" is a lot more than studying fencing techniques, or the "way of the warrior" means more than just practicing kicks and punches. "Combined" and "Coordinated" convey the same general meaning. (Notes from my study of the subject. I do not speak Korean)

Nice explanations...
As mentioned earlier, the Korean words "Hap" "Ki" and "Do" come from specific Chinese characters and each have their own meaning and may be translated a bit differently into English. (Also note that the Chinese characters for Hap Ki Do and for Ai Ki Do are the same characters)
Hap - united, coordinated, combined
Ki - energy, Qi, Chi
Do - Way of... see Capt Ann's notation
In short, don't get too picky about various translations. In Korean, there are many terms for the same thing... some terms coming from Chinese, some from Japanese, and some Native Korean. If you study Korean language, you will find many expressions for the same concept.
Good Training.

Rikimaru33:
Who is your teacher?
Can you tell us who trained you instructor in Hapkido and what organization ranked him as an 8th degree??
You should read the thread under TKD instructors teaching Hapkido on this forum..

Heh sorry need to clarify sumthing. I checked on the facts for his instructors hapkido belt level and i can't find info about him at all. Now don't get me wrong i know for a fact that he's an 8th in TKD but i don't know his belt in Judo and Hapkido, but i know he knows these because he's a korean national champion in judo and TKD. MY instructor teaches hapkido as a self-defense thing not the actual style. He teaches it for those safety lessons. About once a month or less. I have the full trust in my instructor and i have seen his degrees from kikkiwon so he really is a TKD instructor and teaches hapkido only as a "If someone does this to you do this back" thing. If your really interested you can go here and maybe find more information for yourself. www.diensmartialarts.com Well i hope that helps. Sorry about the misconception for his belt rank, bad information. *(rrrrr i'm gonna hit ricky when we get there)*
