I just joined and don't know how to tie the belt. Is it the same as a karate belt?

Can anyone show me a guide or video?

Thanks in advance.

One of the things I like about BJJ is that nobody cares whether your belt is tied right. I get the impression that my school is more "traditional" than most BJJ schools, and we have guys who routinely tie their belts into granny knots.

At the risk of hijacking the thread, I'm curious what a "traditional" jiu jitsu school would be. (None of the jits/shooto guys I've talked to ever mentioned any traditional anything.)

Is it specifically "zhoo zhiitsu" and not "jits"? Is the technique heavily not-quite-separated-from-judo and the sparring mainly for vale-tudo rules? On a lighter note, at roda meetups, do you slam down cheap cachaça to be true to the art's Brazilian roots? :D

I'm curious; what sorts of knots do they use?

I'm curious; what sorts of knots do they use? When I said "traditional" I meant in terms of Japanese MA "traditional". We line up and bow before and after every class. We don't usually call the black belt instructor by his first name in class (it's usually Coach). LOL... I think that's about where the resemblance stops.

A better word would have been "formal." :D

On another note (and going with the flow, since the OP seems to have been answered and rather than starting a new thread), do you guys tie your belts snug or loose? I like mine fairly snug, so that it's harder to pull my gi top out and choke me with it. Other guys like theirs loose, making it hard for their opponent to use it as a handle. I don't think it really matters either way. Jus curious.

I always found that no matter how I tied mine, within a few minutes it was usually spread out across the mat I'd just rolled across.
