Is a squat a romanian deadlift, but once you get to the end rom of the RDL the knees go forward?

I don't understand what you're asking. A RDL is a RDL, and a squat is a squat. They're completely different.

A squat is probably closer to a deadlift with the barbell on the shoulders (and without leaning forward so much).
If your still stuck:

Look in the newbie guide. There is an hour long video of Dan John coaching the squat, and it's great. I did my first squats the other night with no discomfort in my knees, and slight discomfort in my back in the first set, but I was able to correct technique and have it working for me.

When I try to squat right. I bend at my hips first(like good morning or RDL) then my ankles.
If I bend at my ankles first, the weight goes to my quads even though I keep my body weight on the heels.
Im doing them on one leg. Im still perfecting my form on the single leg RDL so I shouldn't realy be thinking of pistols.
Is the form for a pistol the same as a squat? Except on one leg.

i'm so confused. i've got a mental picture of you doing a pistol w/ a barbell on your shoulders like a squat, and your back bent like a good morning....
please tell me this isn't what you are doing cuz i think this is about as smart as a.....thing that's not very smart.

I want to start from teh beginning. Are we referring to a single leg squats or traditional barbell squats?
If you're having trouble with squats, go back to the beginning and squat as normal (think of a child squatting down to pick up something). The pistol should resemble that of a squat.
It sounds like you're almost trying to box squat?

I want to squat using more my glutes and hamstrings than my quads.

Ohhhhh...I gotcha now. Then I would say get a wider stance and start doing box squats or squatting back in a chair.
The pistol will be more like an Olympic style sqaut in which there is more emphasis in hte quads than the hips and glutes.

That surprises me with the pistols, considering with step ups the higher the step the more use of the glutes and hams. I though a psitol would be like realy big step up.

How low should I go with romanian deadlifts?

Simplest way I was taught how to define squat form is imagine you are sitting in a chair without allowing your knees to pass your toes, keeping your posture.

I was down the gym just then squatting. My mate told me that after I finished a guy went in there and tried to squat with the weight I finished with - 130kg. Apparently as soon as he took the bar off the racks one side fell down so the bar was at a 45° across his shoulders....
His mate rushed to help him by lifting up that side but he couldn't so another guy had to lift the other side as well. It sounded funny when he told me about it but it could have been dangerous. Idiocy can hurt....
And then after while I was working the calves some guys were in there learning to squat (maybe I inspired everyone!) with around 100kg  It looked stupid and dangerous. Point people - learn form with light weights!

you have the idiots who squat with all the weight they can load on the abr and bend the knees a tiny amount like if they were doing a curtsy to the queen.
some even set the rack pins just incase they go lower than a slight knee bend.
i was chatting to a friend who was squatting with 110kg and he was doing his curtsy as usual, i said to him i prefer to do ATG and showed him with the same weight, butt to calves and back up.
needless to say he needed to go down to 80kg to do that

As low as flexibility will allow. I do them to mid-shin.

Squatting with knees past toes is actually the natural way we squat down.

If you are new to squats just keep your back straight. Hands on knees for better balance. Squat down so that you can't see your toes. I personally don't let my heels raise off of the ground. I feel if you do you are going too far down.
I used to go very low to the ground but one day I harmed my sciatic nerve. Stayed away from squats for a long time but since I've been doing my squats this way now my nerve doesn't hurt me as much.
This is an injury you don't want that will never go away.

I don't do that form of squats. I put my hand behind my back squat to the ground then jump a few feet in the air. Then do it over and over till my legs wanna fall off. On rare occations for bulking up I'll do regular squats with weight then some deadlifts.

Balance. You would probably fall backwards if you kept a straight back. Don't have to worry about injury though as there is no weight supported by your back.
