here´s another video link, this time it's Blossfechter's interpretations of Ringecks harness fencing with the spear, the longsword, the dagger and wrestling.
Interesting sparring equipment from Icehockey, Streethockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Inlineskating, ....

Neato. I like how those guys use the crossguard of the sword to aim the spear, just like you're supposed to. I've seen a bunch of their vids, all quite well done and entertaining. :)

I'm always a bit surprized that more HEMA practitioners don't take advantage of modern protective equipment for this type of training. You can put together a very effective suit of armor out of hockey, lacrosse etc. equipment for a fraction of the cost of plate armor, and as long as you match it to the right kind of training weapon(s) it lets you fight full-contact with relative safety.

Personally, I'd cut the video down to 2 minutes and skip all the hjalla.
Straight to the point, and not so much pretentious abuse of slow motion would improve the movie greatly.
I like the agenda of filmatizing Liechtenauer quotes, though, and allthough the fight was coreographed, it seemed to show the techniques well enough.
The (idiotic) intro would have fitted better in a full speed, full contact setting IMHO.

Damn I really want to get into Western sword work but it's very difficult to find a school that teaches it in Yorkshire. Love alot of the german work and from what I know that was pretty decent (if choreographed). Not seen very much Ringeck but it looks very nice

I liked it and think it a complete shame, that each time you guys fight one has to die. Sad! :D

Very cool. Though I suspect the spears would be a whole lot harder to deal with in real life than they show in this vid no? It seems neither used it to much effect. One threw his half heartedly and the other just sort of let his be tossed to the to side.
All in all good stuff... looks like it'd be good fun to try some stuff out in that sort of gear. Hmm... I just happen to have a few upper torso poly-carbonate body armors laying around. I should put them to use!!

This seems to me to be a visualization of a series of quotes from a very old manual, and as they want to be sure to show the techniques as cleanly as possible, the video is done without "aliveness*"

It takes a long time to behead someone with a waster... perhaps I should extend my stay. ;)

Actually, armoured combat is beyond my ambit currently. Perhaps I'll learn some in the next year, but I'm not making any promises. :)

No wasters in Glasgow I'm afriad Mark, only steel. It will be great to cross swords with you. Hopefully by then I'll be cleared for freeplay.
Cheers,

From what I've read, the spear became less effective due to armour as a thrown weapon as time went on. However, throwing the first spear is apparently a tradtion that goes back to the dawn of Germanic judicial duelling codes and perhaps to the dawn of the Germanic peoples themselves.

I much prefer steel to wood for most things, a few schwertnehemen excepted where you drop your own sword to take your opponent's. Having a steel blunt hit one on the toes is not happy, and it's hard on floors. :)

Haven't had the pleasure of that yet. I'm sure Glasgow City Council would be none too chuffed if I tore up their nice Victorian wooden floor though.

Interesting stuff on the spear fellas. Given what they're getting at I can see why the lacklustre use of the spear here.
It would be interesting to see some of the Asian styles of spear (Plum Blossom spear?) and the western styles of spear mix it up. I'd be curious about the difference in weight and lengths at relative times history.
I was always under the impression that there was no easy way past a spear or for that matter a polearm. I for one wouldn't relish having to get past one with just a broadsword.

Yes, funny enough I can remember books given to me by dad about the early Germanic tribes and they always plenty of people brandishing spears. So I've often thought of it as a particularly Germanic weapon as well. No doubt much of humanity at one point or another has made good use of the spear... but it's funny how images stay with you well into adulthood.

As I'm working on a migration-era costume and weapon set, I've been reading a bit on spears in scandinavia in 200 - 1000 and -yes, the spear was the main weapon. Most weapon-graves contain spears, often two, one (angorn) interpreted as throwing-spears, and "lances" (a wrong classification, as many associates the word lance with medieval lances), Allmost no spear-shafts have survived, but from the spearheads' weight and shape, one suspects that some where 1h spears, while others were 2h stabbing/slashing-spears (called hoggspjut "chop-spears"). When we fight in lines, we often let people with huge viking-round-shields stand in the line, with people with longer 2h spears behind, poking from behind the (safe) line.
Here are some links to different speartips found in norway from 200 - 1000 ad:
