... so are they good for anything other than burning a few more calories and increasing muscle growth?

Drop sets are a good way of increasing the intensity of you work out, if you feel you havent done enough on that particular body part you can use them on pretty much anything but I wouldn't use them every workout for every part as this will quickly lead to overtraining and all progress will go backwards

Meh, they are okay. You can use them when you are getting bored from your normal routine. Most people use them to the extreme and hecticly over train themselves. My mate was doing 3 drop sets for each muscle group, in one day. Burnt himself out and he put on 0 strength or muscle gains.

Cheers for that guys. I'm not planning to do them very often (if at all), i was working out with a guy and he stuck one drop set on the end of benchpress to get that extra burn, so wondered what good they do. Not too much by the sounds of it!

they help some, but not as much as alot of people claim.
