So a year and a half after I had pnuemonia I have still not been able to pull myself anywhere near back to the level of cardiovascular fitness I was before I contracted Pnuemonia.

Does anyone have any tips/ideas of ways to increase my cardio fitness?

Bear in mind that I have not been able to push myself for a long time now. I tried getting back into HIIT slowly which I used to do loads of, and I can't build it up, I just make myself ill.

Anyone had pnuemonia? what did you do/how long did it take to get your fitness back to normal?

I had pneumonia a few years back, and it does knock you around a bit. Your recovery time will be affected by whether or not you had bacterial or viral pneumonia. Viral is usually more serious, and will take longer to recover from. Also, it depends on the severity of the pneumonia that you had. Seeing as how you are still having problems now, I would imagine that you had viral, and some cell death occurred, but obviously, I am not a doctor, and can not be sure of such things. The best thing you can do is go to a doctor and ask for advice, as any advice on here may be useless, or even dangerous.

Pneumonia is a diffucult illnes to recover from some suffers will tell even after years they still feel that they havent recovered properly and still get some pain. Working in a respiratory ward i see the same people time and time again with reucurrent pneumonia.

i thought it was bacterial as I had antibiotics to get rid of it.
Was got very severe - I was in New York when I got it, so didn't see the Dr till about a week later, by then it was pretty bad.

The Dr didn't really say much about it, and I've been back since when I had a chest infection a few months back (i thought it may be re-occuring) but he just said it was fine and nothing to worry about.

I'm working on a program which has been doing cardio with my heart rate keeping below 150, this seems to be helping, but progress is very very slow. I don't think I'll be doing any HIIT again for a long time to come.

I also have been doing my taichi and qigong practises which seems to keep it under control.

Air con is another pain which can set me off if it's on full blast all day.

thankfully the no smoking in public places is a blessing and I've been able to go out and not have to worry about coughing my lungs up the next day.
