Tonight I attended stumps class of Lau Gar.
I have to say I was suitably impressed with the content of the evening and found everyone (as normal) welcoming and very kind to the poor old Karateka - who didn't stick out like a sore thumb in white really!
Stump teaching...
We began with Escrima. We did a few basics - downward X and upwards X and spinning the stick round your head and back again (???) and 3 attacks/strikes (No. 1-3) and one defence before we ran out of time. This went on for about half an hour.
Warm up
Sheesh! Remind me not to do this when I have Bronchitus again! We ran and ran and ran around the hall! We each got to call out the agony of what we had to put the rest of the class through, higher stepping, pushups, situps, etc...joy! A very intense and almost breath taking experience for me!
Jenna took us through stretching. Thankfully long enough for us to catch our breath. I was very impressed with the varied and appropriate stretching she gave us to do.
Newton (Black Sash)
He took the class from here on in after we had a brief chat and intro. We did the formal bow before class started (representing the sun and moon - right fist in left open hand) and got into horse stance and did single, double and triple punches for a bit. Then into fighting stance (hands en garde and in spear hand), bouncing from foot to foot! I have had to describe these to get the names - so hopefully the names are correct!
We did up and down the hall with punches and stances...they (the rest of the class) did more advanced stuff - I just did step, double block and double punch and then brought both hands up to my chest in fists (Sern Ping Choi). The rest of the class did a thing where they had 80% weight on their back leg and 20% on front and had their elbows together and striked (Sern Butsi)(*Double spearhand. The elbows together is a block for a front kick - followed by an eye strike).
Then we went on to kicking:
single and double side kick
single side kick, followed by head kick
side kick - head kick - crescent kick whilst jumping forward on the back leg
I am absolutely positive that we did more of both of the above - I just couldn't take all of it in! I apologise for things I have missed out...it is kinda late :(
Warm down
We did a warm down where we were in horse stance and bent the knee inwards and it was above the ground by about an inch and did this punch to the front - even though our legs and hips were faced towards the side. We had to do it both sides and my thighs were screaming! (Bow Stance). This was about the only technique all evening that hurt from the start for me!
During the techniques mentioned, I did slip now and then into Shotokan. Newton was patient and I did actually end up doing the correct technique now and then (I think).
Then who ever was interested stayed on to do some sets (kata/patterns). I have established that after this description:
"he does this one legged stance then does peek a boo with his hands and then steps back and blocks to the left, then right then eye strike? then blocks again either side and then steps forward in a wide left front stance with arms akimbo - followed by a wide right front stance, etc, then kicks lower and and smacks his left hand with his right fist and then turns round and does this double block"
It made perfect sense to me!
That this is called: Bac Pye Jeun (Palm of the Bac Pye Mountain, or Eight Peak Palm)
I apparently missed the whole first part of this set, but I was practising Jorn Sau at the time...
I sincerely apologise for any missed sections or bad descriptions. I can't do justice to a martial art or Instructor after one evening with them. All I can say, is I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would be happy to say that anyone who is passing through this way will enjoy a thorough, hard-working session with this club, with a very friendly bunch of people who enjoy Newtons funnys (and they were funny).
Thanks for the invite stump! Thank Newton again for letting me impose. :)
