This forum started out waaaaay back with some questions on Black Belts, and I picked this quote off the site you linked which kind of took me back in time;

"Face facts: a black belt used to mean that the man wearing it was hell in any back alley brawl, but nowadays cripples, old ladies, and kids wear them."

In some ways the article seems to be raising new points, but the more I look at it, the more I see the same statement!

I found this extremely thought provoking, i think it may help shape the way i look at martial arts. Absolutley right - a good part of it, though i don't totally agree; Jo public has to have something, we may not all be prize fighters but 'strip mall' martial arts might just help someone in a desperate situation(mugging perhaps)it may save there life - there again, it could cost them there life too(trying to perform a technique that just won't work)!


It seems that jo public might as well toss a coin, unless they do some hardy research first?
