Inspired by the what is Hung Gar thread, I was wondering if we knew the creators of certain styles. I'm just really curious, and to see if we can list some of them.

Hung Hei Goon- Hung Gar
Ng Mui- Wing Chun
T'ang L'ang- Preying Mantis
Wu Mui or Mui Fa San Yang- Dragon Style

That's all I really know.

Since no 2 people practice their style the EXACT same way, everyone originates their own style. Like Bruce Lee said (yeah I know he's over quoted) "My Jeet Kune Do is not your Jeet Kune Do.":D

Well I'm thinking in terms of framework, as in the origins of the style could be found in certain people.

Chan Heung, the creator of the Choi Lee Fut style.

or if you are from the Hung Sing(Fut San) Branch then Yeung Yim would be a co founder (to some the founder)with Chan Heung.

Tam Sarm, creator of the Buk Sing(Northern Branch) of Choi Lee Fut.(the youngest of the three branches).

The creator of Bak Sing Choi Lee Fut Tam Sarm first studied the Hung Sing (Fut San) Branch. Tam Sarm was a fighter and disliked learning forms, prefering to spend his time sparring. It was because of all this sparring he got into a fight at his school and was expelled.

Over the years Tam Sarm fought many fights winning most/all, until one day he fought a very famous sifu of the Northern Shaolin style by the name of Ku Ju-Chang, the fight was long but neither sifu could gain advantage over the other so the match was decided a draw, since both sifu had such high respect for each other they decided to share knowledge.

Both Hung Sing and Fut San Hung Sing branches are about 2/3 Southern and 1/3 Northern in origin, while Bak Sing because of Ku Ju-Changs imput is regarded as 50/50 Northen/Southern.

The Hung Sing branches of Choi Lee Fut have well over 100 hand and weapon forms and at least 8 dummy forms, while Buk Sing traditionaly has only 3 hand forms and 1 weapon(staff) form. Some Sifu of Buk Sing have learned additional hand and weapon forms from both the Hung Sing branches and from the Bak Siu Lum(Northern Shaolin) styles.

Buk Sing has so few forms like I said because they prefer to fight/spar than to spend to much time on forms. Buk Sing is also famous for its Charp Choi(Panther Fist) punches and has many different variations of the punch. Foot work tends to be a little more faster than the Hung Sing branches because of the Northern influence.

Try this web site for more information on Buk Sing Choy Lee Fut and little info of the sifu's history(Bruce lee included)

Abbrieviated version: The Qing emperor Yong Zheng infiltrated into the southern Shaolin Mon astery as a monk to learn Shaolin Kungfu.. Later he dispatched the Qing army, with the help of Lama monks from Tibet, to raze the southern Monastery to the ground. Some Shaolin masters escaped the inferno, and fled to Guangdong, which became the stronghold where many Southern Shaolin styles developed. To avoid the attention of the Qiing government, these masters did not use the term "Shaolin". The styles of kungfu they taught were called after the masters' surnames or after their characteristic forms. The five famous styles that took the masters' surnames were Hoong Ka, Lau Ka, Choy Ka, Li Ka and Mok Ka, "Ka" being the Cantonese (Guangdong) dialect for "family". The styles that were named after their characteristic forms were Dragon Style Kungfu , Black Tiger Kungfu and White Crane Kungfu. Later, Choy-Li-Fatt Kungfu was named as a result of a combin ation of three styles -- Choy Ka, Li Ka and Fatt Ka (which means Buddha Style); and Wing Choon Kungfu after the founder, Yim Wing Choon.

Sometime later my teacher Sifu Roy Truman learnt Mok Kafrom master Charles Chan, who brought the style to England.

Sorry for going on a bit
