what kind of question is that? are you just trying to inflate your post count?

No I'm not scared. I love competition and that's why I go as often as possible. There's a slight chance I may not even be able to compete myself this time (depending on my injuries, but it looks good right now), but regardless I'll be there to support the people I train with. Competition is great for your game and nothing to be scared of, though it's completely normal to be nervous your first couple times. That's why you should do as many as possible, get that non-sense out of your system early.

NAGA? sure it's a real tournament... and a fairly well known one, but it's not by any means the top competition of it's type.

Ok, I didn't see your link.

Yes, the Mundials is the biggest BJJ tournament, but it's completely different from NAGA.

The Mundials is a Pure 100% BJJ tournament with BJJ rules. NAGA is an open style grappling tournament with retarded rules that are not supposed to cater to one style over another... especially in the no-gi divisions.

If you enter Novice no-gi at NAGA you may get heel hooked by a SAMBO guy in your first match... BJJ tends not to use or teach leg locks, or leg lock defense to people with under 6 months of training, so that actually happens a lot.

in the mundials no leg locks or heel hooks or whatever are allowed...

only brown and black belts can utilize them

Because trolls are seen and not heard.

It's my first tournament for chrissakes. Much like when I go to Court, if I weren't nervous I'd be more concerned. Make of that what you will, Lord knows you always do and I have more important things to deal with today. I'll post a blow-by-blow here and on my myspace page when I get back.

Now, I need to finish getting my crap together so I can be out the door in about 30 minutes.

Good luck, dude. Just enjoy it, nerves are natural but there's nothing to be "scared" of. As a little incentive, there's an e-cookie in it for you if you win your match by gogoplata :D

Dude, I've been training for eight weeks, I'm not sure I even know what in the bloody hell a "gogoplata" is!

I got a silver in masters flyweight gi (I won't lie, small divison guaranteed to medal), got mauled in no-gi in the same age/weight class; I don't train no gi, but for $80 to register I wanted my money's worth, dammit! One of my classmates got a gold in men's middleweight gi. There was much rejoicing and our instructor treated all of us to dinner :)

We also all managed to give each other new nicknames by the end of the day, had to fight to keep our instructor from running into the ocean and off some of the goofy Boardwalk rides, and decided that next year we're getting hotel rooms, lol.

You can call me "Davey Bones" from now on :p

Nice job. Our tournaments around here aren't quite big enough to support age brackets, so us older guys are usually mixed right in with the puppies. :)

Glad you had a good time, and it was cool meeting you there!

I wasted A LOT of energy trying to cut a few pounds... to the point where I passed out, but I only had 1 more pound to go! so I went back to my room, shaved my head and came back a half pound over!!!! I was so pissed, but I didn't have much time to recover and there was no way I could cut anymore, so I fought up a weight class. and tried my best to get myself back, but when you drain yourself that much it takes a big toll....

... so it's a good thing I completely overestimated my competition, and still managed to kick some ass. I expected Intermediate to be a lot tougher since it was 2-5 years of training. Next time I'm definitely jumping to Advanced No-Gi, and I'm not going to cut.

... they even made me break the ever-loving **** out of some poor guys arm in my first match... lord only knows why he wouldn't tap; I gave him plenty of time, and even pleaded to him so I didn't have to break his arm. i have a video I'll put up, it was disgusting. Were you there for that one Domino?

After that there was a ref-screw-up and I got a bye because they put the wrong name down, then I fought a kid that kinda pissed me off by trying to pull my headgear over my eyes 3 TIMES!!! so I clinched hard slapped him in a flying armbar, but instead of finishing it I slipped out and took his back to go for the Twister, and I cranked it hard (probably hurt him now that I think about it), but I was close to his knee with my leg grip and with all the sweat he managed to slip out, later I took his back again, and armbarred him, then switched from the armbar to a triangle, and started cranking the armbar from inside the triangle and he tapped just as the time was up.

After that I fought a guy that I didn't think would make it to the finals. he was probably in the best shape and definitely the biggest in the division, but he left himself very open for submissions once he past the guard. So i figured I'd pull guard, try to work till he passed then submit him when he thinks he's safe (he had a lot of holes in his side control, and not one submission that night)...

anyway when we went up he kept reaching one hand down and one up, and considering that I knew I completely outclassed him I decided to put on a little show and attempt a flying triangle from four feet away. I actually hit it, but he was slippery as **** for some reason, and I slipped right off, but he didn't react quickly and I grabbed both his heels and swept him right over (again he was so slippery that even as I swept him my feet slid right off his hips... weird) and I stupidly left my bad foot in a bad stop as I went to sit up into mount. He slapped on a heel hook, and I defended by rolling out, and it was coming loose easy because of how slippery he was, but because of how bad that ankle is the third time we rolled his weight landed on it and I tapped as I was slipping out, lol. I had to ice it right away, or I wouldn't have been able to compete in Gi at all... I probably still shouldn't have done Gi, but the pain in my ankle went away in time so I made myself do it

Anyway I took silver, but ain't worried because I learned a valuable lesson about showboating... don't **** around (esp. in the finals) even if you think you have someones game completely figured out.

Whoa! Why do guys always get their arms broken at NAGA tourneys?

I wanted to go, but I was broke and had to study for MCATs.

Always great to put a face to a myspace or MAP name!

I don't have that problem. If anything, I need to talk to my trainer and coach, it's obvious I need to gain a few pounds. I was without a doubt the lightest guy in my weight class, I need to gain about 10-15 then be able to cut 5. I weighed in at 130.5; I'll need to be about 10 pounds heavier next year to be competitive.

That sucks man, one of my guys missed by like half a pound and ran all over the beach for half an hour to make weight!

Probably smart. Of course, with NAGA's attemppt to prevent sandbagging, you may not have a choice next year, lol.

I want to see that vid, I missed it, probably because I didn't recognize you at first. I wil say I was really concerned about all the injuries which happened. It seemed like every 30 minutes or so there was a call for "medic". I was very disappointed.

That may be the one I first saw you in...

LOL, I hear you! It was a great experience, and I'll just have to gain some weight and train harder for next year ;)

And I forgot to mention that guy with the ref screw up came up to me after the division was finished all upset saying he was left out. So I offered him a roll for my medal, because he won a match then was left out in the semi's because the ref called the wrong name. Anyway I got an early submission here also with a north south choke.

I couldn't make it out early enough to compete (6hr friggin drive...no way I was getting up that early to roll), but I did show up around 6ish to meet up with the few from my camp who were still going at it, as well as my friends debut MMA bout in Reality Fighting next door.

Real nice guy, but very strong and loves to take the back.... actually loves everything Marcelo Garcia does well.

He's the guy that actually gave me this nickname when I first started training.

Tell him I said hi, and I miss training with him. Him and his friend Tim (who I still train with) used to be hilarious together. Last time I saw him was at fight house, and he embarrassed this REALLY scary looking guy that was twice his size. The guy he fought looked like Mike Tyson would if he drank the Ninja Turtle Ooze Super Shredder drank at the end of the movie, lol. Tattooed face and all.
