I am 18, 5 ft 10, 140 lbs , im lanky not very strong but am looking for a martial art for self defense, i wound like something that does not focus on attacking but something that would focus more on counters , for example never actually attacking someon only countering / evading any attack they ever use on you.

I dont know if that is confusing or not but any help is appreciated and if it is confusing let me know and i will try to clear it up

The two go together, you can't learn one without the other.

Trying to learn nothing but defence leaves everyone standing around with their hands in their pockets....

Or, you could go straight to the best way to do that and take up sprinting.

Aikido might be your cup of tea.

For something like that, i think the best thing to do would be to look at Jujutsu. It relies more on compliance than force. Its probably the best one for you if thats what your after.

Give up on the idea of not hitting or hurting the attacker. Whilst it sounds nice in theory, it is not practical. If you're involved in a violent confrontation someone is likely to get hurt, either you or the other guy. Which would you prefer it to be?

I would have to agree with 1ONEfighting, sounds like you might like Aikido.
