What is the point of life, if no matter what you do, there will always be someone better than you, smarter, faster, and there will always be someone worse, so you'll always be stuck in the middle. We go to school, get a job, retire (if you last that long), die and are forgotten about. We fall in love to get heartbroken. "Everyone I know, goes away, in the end." You always have to settle being the runner up, accept that you can't be the best. Regardless of how hard you work at it, someone works harder. Or they're just smarter than you are. Being the best I can be seems to be self defeating.

You need to see the bigger picture.
We're just something that evolved with a working brain.
And you can be the best.Anyone can with unbroken resiliation. The best don't just practise ___, the are _____. Now, everyday i come home from school, and hit my bag for 4-5 hours. Everyday my body lets me.
Ok, on Christmas day i only do one hour.
But anyhoo, the best train all their life, and eventually, they know they're the best, without needing to prove it.

RE-READING THIS I'VE NOTICED IT'S AN EXTEREMLY HAPPY POST- NO IM NOT P.U.I, IT’S JUST HOW I FEEL ABOUT LIFE
It’s about SELF-DEVELOPMENT (think about those two words).
That's what my sig is about...Life is brilliant. Go out and do something- LIVE YOUR LIFE, FEEL EMOTIONS, SPEAK TO PEOPLE, EXCERCISE YOUR BODY, EXCERCISE YOU MIND, BREATHE AND REALISE WHY YOU BREATHE, LOOK AT TREES AND FLOWERS AND BE STUNNED BY HOW FANTASITIC THEY ARE, JUMP UP AND DOWN- TRY IT AND I BET YOU FEEL HAPPIER (JOY BASED, RIGHT KC?), EAT A FESH PIECE OF FRUIT AND REALLY THINK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING.
LIFE IS A GIFT- THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED THE PRESENT (cheesy but good- the seconds that you have spent reading this post have passed and will never exist again so value the present, the here and now)
Yes we all die but while I'm here I want to live and be aware that I am living.
I am coming up for 100 posts and I was going to make it the start of a "I'm proud of myself, today I...." and then you add what you have done that has made you happy to be you so that when you have a sh*t day, you can look back and see "hey, I'm not all that bad, in fact I am quite good"
(END OF HAPPY SERMON)

Hah, you know, you just might be the best at something, it's just that you don't know it yet :) anyways, life is worth the effort mainly because of love; i mean, i could be the most mediocre man alive, but as long as i love & am loved, i don't really care about it... and that's the bottom line; it's not about who you are, but how you feel.

Love is a terrible thing to live for, because it'll never be found. You'll simply be taken advantage of, and those who dont do it straight away, are just trying to figure out which spot they can stab the knife in to make it hurt the worst. Humanity is cruel to ridiculous absolutes. I've known people driven mad by others over nothing at all important. Love is going the way of the dinosaur and the dodo. Selfishness is on the rise now. Live for fame and riches, just like the rest of the human race does.

There was a story on Scottish news a while back about one of the last surviving 1st world war veterans in Scotland. A letter had been sent to him by the government to try and get him to a rememberance parade. The letter was returned 'not at this address'. As he is about 104 years old now they assumed he died.
The local paper got a hold of him and got him on the national news. There's something like 14 british survivors of that war. When he was asked how he'd managed to live this long he said 'Whiskey and cigarrettes' - he almost passed out from laughing so hard :D

Tierces, I tend to agree with you. I have seen the worst of humanity and what they do to each other in the name of 'religion, God, and love'. Once we become adults, its mostly the same thing trying to get ahead, trying not to corrupt our children, and enjoying the small things in our lives. The big picture is sooo bleak. We can't trust our government, hell we can't trust any government. They treat us like children and most of the populace swallows the company line hook, line and sinker.
What I do in my job takes me to strange places full of evil people. I see every day, what mistrust, greed, and corruption does to people. I try to make a small difference in the lives I touch, but ultimately, we will fail...

The world is the world, make of it what you will.
You've got only one life, accept or mourn the way it is. Your choice really.

It just always seems that something goes wrong, regardless of what I do to prevent it, and I'm beginning to wonder if it's actually just some subconcious way for me to cop out.

A problem can be an obstacle or a challenge.
What makes the difference?

As a long-time pessimist who has heard all of the arguments, I will contribute to this thread.

Realize that all your problems are in your head and you will be halfway there.

It is not the destination that matters, but the journey itself. Wherever you go, whatever you do, you will still have only yourself. If it makes you happy to try to be the best, then do so. If the idea of never being the best makes you miserable with desire and envy, let it go.
This lifetime will soon end. Why spend even a single minute striving for something that only makes you miserable? Enjoy the journey.
Every day I strive to be a little better than I was the day before. This, to me, is success.
There are countless cliches which come to mind in this matter. My personal favorite is this one:
"No matter where you go...
...there you are."
