Same here, been looking, found nothing decent.

For personal/project/testing sites, I tend to use free webspace. Lycos (http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk/) Its got 50 megabytes of space, and uses PHP, MySQL and some other stuff too.

I've been using Catalog.com (http://www.catalog.com), butI'm not sure if they will do business internationally (they're located in Texas). But they are cheap. Typically basic hosting is free as long as you register your domain through them.

You might want to check out B-Net's Builder.com (http://www.builder.com) for their recommendations. They usually rate services.

Hope this helps,

- Matt

Set up your own:

apache from www.apache.org - I think you need 1.3.x to go with MySQL or PHP (newer versions don't support one of them, think it's PHP), I can't remember - been a while since I've done it.... the latest version might support it now.

MYSQL from www.mysql.com

php from www.php.net

Thanks for those Suggestions. I'll look em up :)

I'm current using portland.co.uk's free hosting. No ads, but no cgi or php either. Only 15mb too I think (might be 25)

Does lycos have all the feaures?
That something new... I though they were like geocitys or something.

Yoda, I'm just going to try ignore that comment... best way to deal with a let down :P

Matt, that looks like a pretty good deal.. if only I didnt already have the domain name :(

Cyph: I have set up my own. But the problem is my Linux box is a pos (no, not point of sale, the other pos). And My ADSL drops out every few days, re-assigning a new IP.

Yeah, it's good if you just want to run the apache just over the network, or if you have a completely static IP, but in this situation... its a no-go.

I thought you said personal project... you still want others to view it though?

maybe cough up the money for a static IP?

Greg-VT

ok, so maybe I should have said "It's a project of mine".

SIP: Nah, not worth it for the machine it will be running on.

Lycos runs MySQL and PHP for sure, not sure about CGI though.

I tried portland.co.uk for my club's website. Its quite possibly the worst host I've come across. Very slow, the uptime is terrible and half the time the site would only load selectively i.e it would load for some people, but not for others at the exact same time.

How long ago was that?

I've beening using it on and off for years... and i must admit: I've given up on alot off pages I've had hosted there just because of the reasons you gave.

But this time it seems different. I've had the site up with the domain for about 4 days, and haven't had a problem yet. Maybe I've just been lucky so far.

But yeh, I'm dying for cgi and php. I wanna get some features runnin

www.topcities.com (http://www.topcities.com) has a good free service and I don't think it's too bad on the paid service. Free doesn't have PHP, but you can pay for it.

it wasn't that long ago VT it was terrible i tried to look at her site and it was a lottery whether the page displayed or not.

you can get php and mysql support for quite cheap in a few places but i haven't checked them out

It was about 3 weeks, maybe a month ago tops. Like WhiteWizard said, it was pretty much the luck of the draw who could see it, and who couldn't. He could see my site, but for my boyfriend it has never loaded up. I did have a really good, but rather dubiously named host (so dubious it won't make it past the obsenity checker!), but it got closed down because of Warez/mp3 divvy's :(

If I find anything, I'll keep you posted, I'm always using free hosts for something or other

Portlond has decided to show it's true colours - the colours I've seen before with my other sites.

So, I went for a hunt to end all hunts.

I found this host here, which appears pretty good. Unforunatly, they are not accepting applications while they are upgrading there service.

www.beigetower.org

Their features are long, lots of webspace -basically everything you need. Free.

I don't exactly want to wait for those fellows to start accepting again, becasue I don't really know how long it will be untill they do.

So I found this other mob. These guys are bit more picky about who they accept. The list of features is still long, and plenty of webspace -for a free host.

www.clouddead.net

I applied for that one. Whether or not I get accepted I don't know. We'll see and I'll let ya's know.

If you have any questions about applying etc, let me know.

www.xtreme-solutions.com is primarily a game hosting service, but they offer websites with scripting support and stuff, for like $5 a month, 500 megs of space, up to 5 gigs bandwidth.

http://www.digital-crocus.com/

Look for the bronze package - £15 a year

50mb web space
5 gigabytes monthly transfer
Mailbox with POP or Webmail access
MySQL, PHP and CGI support

Sounds like a good deal to me.

It's more definite than maybe! :D

If enough people are interested, I'll start putting a package together.
