hey
we hear loads from the black belts on everything realted to Hapkido however most of it tends to be over my head or on things i am not really into and i never really want to post anything as they seem to discredit anything anyone says if they havnt trained in the art for a long time. I am only a green belt and been training for about 9 months so thought i would set up a thread for colour belts for other colour belts to give there views and oppinions on Hapkido of all styles.
Please no flames though lets keep it friendly prove we have valied oppinons too without it going into a flaming war.
At the start of your posts it would be great to here your grade and how long you have trained for.

James from Montana here, 1st Gup in CHKD, been training for about six years now. Learning a lot from not only my instructor, but with proper requests have made semminars at other acadamies here in town. It all comes back to what I learn. And that alone is amazing, that our art is so all encompassing, as are all arts IMO at a certain level. Looking forward to my BB test sometime this winter. Nice to see you all posting!

Hi saint15,
I've been passively lurking (I prefer the term "visiting" LOL) on the Hapkido Forum for a while now. I actually made my first post yesterday !!!
I am a 6th Gup (I actually have my test for 5th Gup tonight - wish me luck).
I've been studying for 2 years now. We do YonMooKwan Style Hapkido at the School I go to and our GrandMaster is Kwang Sik Myung.
Peace

We do fairly intensive full contact sparring, with all ranges covered including stand up striking and locking as well as takedowns and groundwork with striking and locking as well. Not sure is this is the norm for all ICHF schools, but we, that is my school, are comfortable on the ground beyond the BJJ rules and technique. It's a lot of fun, but can be damaging to the body if done frequently, so we keep it for special occasions such as testing, or for whole class sessions devoted to getting and taking some good shots, locks, throws and grappling in. Always fun and humbling.

Hi All,
I passed my test last week, and I am now a 5th Gup.
I re-read the original post and realized I didn't answer the question about weapons.
The only weapon that I've trained with is the Dan Bong (Short Stick).
I've just learned basic blocks and strikes with it.
The weapon that I really want to learn is the Hapkido Cane - I don't think they let you train in that until your at least a black belt or maybe even a 2nd degree black belt.
I like the cane because nobody expects that it can be a real weapon (in the right hands). If somebody sees a cane, they don't even think twice about it. If you walk down the street with a sword, well, I think the police would be very interested in your activities.

congratulations on passing your grading IronPanda
i would really like to learn the cane aswell though think we can learn it when we get out black belt dont get to learn any short stick till red belt which is the last one before black but looking foward to it. Am also looking foward to learning sward not a very usfull skill in todays society but one i want to learn anyway.
unfortunatly i have come home for the summer and there are no hapkido clubs in my area so not going to be doing any training till september having withdrawral symptoms alread only been bk a week and half
so any more colour belts out there want to talk about anything and everything to do with hapkido dont be shy this is the place to talk about it and you never no we might be able to answer some of your questions err maybe, possably

Hi, I'm a yellowbelt in Combat Hapkido. I've had about three months of training.
I've already had a few escrima stick (different word for dan bong?) classes. And the guy who started CaneMasters comes in every now and then to hold a cane class.
I think you guys will have fun with the cane. Once you start using the crook/horn it gets really interesting.

Hello my names kev nad im an aclchohilic ahh wait sorry wrong forum im a 2nd dan.
as far as im concerned high grades belittleing lower grades is a form of insecurity, by putting down the students who have only been training for a year or two makes them feel important as the think thier grade grant sthem the right to. not as far as im concerned im a big beleiver in everyone having a slant and ideas about their arts and they are no more invalid than anyone elses. its egotism

I am a red belt in Jin Jung Kwan Hapkido. The only weapons I have trained with so far have been during seminars - Dan Bong (short stick); Extendable baton; and Bokken. These seminars were a BLAST!!! I am REALLY looking forward to learning the cane as it is really practical and you never know if you will ever require the use of one as you get older.

I know this is a thread for colour belts so I offer this only to help a bit with perspective.
I have been in MA since 1973, and have been in Hapkido since 1985. I have my 4th Dan in YON MU KWAN Hapkido which I recieved in April of 2004. I also have a 3rd Dan in Korean sword work (GOM-BOP). Though its difficult I continue to train and teach in both arts as well as promote the Hapkido arts and do research into Korean MA. FWIW.
Best Wishes,
Bruce

I'm 7th gup in Sung Moo Kwan Hapkido. Weapons training isn't required while you still have a coloured belt but you start knife defense at 2nd gup. Every once in a blue moon or two we might dabble in sword or short stick. If enough people show interest my KJN will teach Kumdo as a separate class, you don't even have to be a part of the HKD club to join. Unfortunately there's not enough interest right now.

I do not formally train in Hapkido.
I am a red/ black and have been training for just over a year.
Now that I have that out of the way, my school's base is TKD, but my Master started training in Hapkido close to ten years ago and it is a full part of our program. Most of the Hapkido aspect is transfered into our self defenses under 1st Dan, after that we work on more aspects of Hapkido.
Weapons: Cane and Kumdo, or sword work. We also dabble in Eskirma which is really neat but has nothing to do with Hapkido at all.
I did not want to spoil the Hapkido talk but my school does not train much in Olympic style TKD and Hapkido interests me a lot.

I've already had a few escrima stick (different word for dan bong?) classes.
Not a colored belt so I'll limit my words and let you guys have some fun. Just fyi a dan bong is generally 6-8 inches long and an escrima stick is generally 24+ inches long. Totally different techniques with the two. One being usually korean (dan bong) and the other filipino (escrima)
Here is a dan bong video
YouTube - How To Use Hapkido Weapons : How To Use A Dan Bong
and here is an escrima/kali.
YouTube - Dan Inosanto - Kali Video
Notice the BIG difference in stick length.

Hmmmm.....I was tought that the DanBong was 4 fists in lingth so it depends on the person but 6 - 8 in would be a rather small person. Now I was tought this in Kuk Sool not Hapkido, so I guess the deff, of " short stick " could be correct in either art!

Note I said "generally". Just type dan bong into any search engine and you'll come up with different results...
15 -30 cm here
http://www.hapkido.it/hapweapons.htm
8-12 inches here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_Hapkido
8 inches sold here
http://www.woodensteel.com/dan-bong-small-stick-clear-plastic-p-472.html
12 inches sold at the same site
http://www.woodensteel.com/dan-bong-small-stick-hardwood-round-p-401.html
Even at it's largest I personally have never encountered anyone that called a 24+ inch stick a dan bong or an 8 inch stick an escrima/kali/arnis stick but maybe that's just me.
