Hi all,

wondering what everyone's opinions were on musical forms?

I think they are about as far removed from my idea of martial arts as you can get.

If people like them & enjoy them then great - but they don't appeal to me at all.

Great for the kids, great for the public to see, but as Yoda says, of little direct martial benefit.

Not to say that someone who happens to do Musical forms is not an able Martial Artist. Jean Frenette springs to mind.

As I'm a part-time musician, I listen for the rhythm in things, and rhythm is part of timing. MA combat has rhythm, and you can listen to it, use it or break it as you see fit. There are better ways of developing this than Musical forms though........

Regards

Andy

I saw my first musical form last week. I had heard of them but never really realised what they were. I was very impressed with the athleticism, the power they appeared to generate in order to fall into stances in order to match the beat was pretty impressive too.

I would be interested to see the similarities and differences of the training though. I would imagine they fumble about in stances at first like the rest of us, hit/kick bags, have some understanding of why they are doing what they are doing as well. I wonder if they fight as well?

Perhaps I am easily impressed? Or just too curious, but I think it would be of interest.

I have never practised my Tai Chi forms without traditional chinese music in the background....probably does not count as a musical form as the movements performed do not relate to the music in any way, its just there as a mood setter. Good way to relax into the forms though.

Saying that...i dont think it would work doing the Yang 24 step to "eye of the tiger"!!!!!

Ok, what about Capoiera? I heard that sparring matches and forms in this style are always accompanied by traditional Brazilian music.

I think that they are good for demo and shows to get people thinking about the MA but i dont like to see them practiced in a MA class. I think it takes away from the MA.
