Hi there
"Best" is very subjective.
What are your goals?
What is you MA experience to date?
How old are you?

What Kung Fu style is the best?
You ask a complex question that lacks an answer.
What Kung Fu style is best for you?
There's an answer to this one, but it's gonna take you to find it.
Do some research into the backgrounds of the various styles to see if they sound like your thing. If the schools offer it, take a free lesson or two to see what you think.

As an avid NYC fan I keep try to keep up to date on teachers for when I next visit.......hopefully real soon......
Anyway, in Manhattan - I would suggest you find Sifu Frank Yee or any of his teachers (Yee's Hung Ga) - a very well renowned Hung Ga stylist.
Also, Tak Wah Eng teaches Tiger Claw style and is also very well known.
There are many, many styles in NYC and I'm sure you could find what you want. If it's straight Shaolin then I believe Shi Guolin has now opened a branch in Manhattan.
Why not visit the martial arts shop, Bok Lei Po on Mott Street. I'm sure they will have loads of flyers for schools.
Hope this helps

LeeGreg89,
It sounds like your looking for Kung Fu for the wrong reasons...
By the sounds of it...I bet your being threatened somehow and your looking for a style to fight people...If that is the case...You are joining the Kung Fu Society for the wrong reasons...but anyways...here's some advice...
If that was the case...You are surely joining for the wrong reasons. If you go back in history, Shaolin was only taught to buddist because it's lethal art was not intended to kill...but to protect! However...it is now available to anyone these days.
Well first off...I have to say...there is no such thing as the "BEST" style or a "GOOD" style...Each style has it's advantage and disadvantage. That's like asking which is better...External or Internal Power...Northern or Southern...They all have their advantages and disadvantages...and the "GREATNESS" of the style depends on how experienced and how good you are at YOUR style...So to say that something like Karate is bad is being totally ignorant...and saying that Northern Shaolin is the best is being totally arrogant! You have to be good at your style in order to make it of any use to you. Get my drift?
Well...Tiger Claw and Snake Fist is not taught individually anymore. Infact, those two are not usually taught together unless your taking Shaolin Five Animals or Shaolin Ten Animals.
Tiger Claw and Snake Fist cannot be found alone, however they are now found within styles such as Hung Gar, Shaolin, Choy Lee Fut...etc.
All these styles uses these animal fist within the style, so it is only a portion of the style. It is not a style entirely on it's own, but a portion. For example, many shaolin moves will use the tiger claw or you may learn a form in choy lee fut or hung gar in the snake fist...So if your looking for these fist specifically, your out of luck...if your looking for a style which utilizes these fist...then look into the styles.
Bruce Lee eventually was the founder of Jeet Kune Do...
He started off learning the southern style of Wing Chun...and eventually studied many other arts to learn different techniques...putting them together, forming JKD. [note: Nunchucks is not a Chinese weapon...three sectional staff is though...however in wing chun...the only weapons are butterfly swords (bat jam tao) and the dragon pole (9' staff)...only way Bruce Lee learned nunchucks was through another actor who knew Karate]...
My school teaches Northern Shaolin, Wing Chun, and my style Southern Shaolin White Crane...Now Northern Shaolin is a GENERALIZED term...If you study it, you will discover that it breaks down into many categories like, Cha Chuan, and more...Finding Tiger Claw, Snake fist and Eagle claw is quite possible in these styles...
An easy way to search for schools is by, word of mouth, yellow pages, or the internet...Now remember...even if you do find "Eagle Claw"...most styles also have many different branches...
Take White Crane for Example...White Crane breaks down into Tibetan and Southern Shaolin Styles...then My southern shaolin white crane style also breaks down into 4 different sub-divisions...Eating, Resting, Crying and Flying...AND EACH ONE IS DIFFERENT!...so the name doesn't really make a difference...because in my Flying style of White Crane...we have Eagle Fist and Tiger Claw as well...so...As you can see...the Style is not important...it's what your interested in learning...
Hope that answers your question...

Well, I don't know much about this school, but I can tell you want I do know.
First. The head of the school is a real shaolin monk.
Second. The first time I learned about the school was on TV. TLC was doing the top 10 martial arts and #1 was Shaolin Kung Fu and this school was the feature of that section.
Third. My litttle brother does an hyrid Shaolin/Kenpo/Karate style and his friend who is a 2 dan of that style, wanted to get serious about Shaolin Kung Fu and left Long Island to travel an hour into the city to train at this dojo. He is very happy there.

i went to see the shaolin monks when they were here, also one stayed in an area close to me and i asked the people around what he has been doing, one of the things he said was along the lines of "I can break iron with my head and still remain humble"
( not the exact wording )
The caretakers said that he spent most of the day and some of the night meditating and training.

i've been to that school and watched a class...so i'm gonna put in my pennies worth... The shaolin KF monk Shi yan ming teaches is RPC (Republic of China) Shaolin Wushu. it's pretty much WUSHU with Shaolin Flavor. ok which means....................................it's not authentic kung-fu. The Shaolin temple in China is nothing more but a government funded tourist attraction these days. They have athlete monks who train in Wushu that razzle dazzle tourists with their 'chi' tricks and Wushu like forms (they are great athletes by all means ). and then there are the Shaolin monks who study buddhism. There's a lot of misconceptions in the Chinese Martial Arts today...the MYTHS of Shaolin being the origin of Kung-fu or ULTIMATE kungfu is one of them......I suggest this book if you're looking to start Kung-fu

it's an excellent read and it will help you discern and gain a little better understanding to WHAT real Kung-Fu is. The chinese government Contemporary Wushu or SHAOLIN WUSHU for one is NOT authentic Kung-fu...any traditional Kung-fu master or practicioner will say the same...

I don't much about Shaolin Politics and such, but all I know is my little bro's friend is happy there, and he said it close to him (living in NYC that means walking distance). I would say visit the dojo, most places let you take one free class.
