View Full Version : A dorky newbie idea?

Obviosuly, if you've seen my prior posts, I am a newb, maybe even the newb of the newbs! ; ) But I was wondering if this was a dumb idea. I have ADD, and once I get into something, its an obsession until boredom strikes so fast that I hop onto something else, and forget about what I got into even faster. A lot of people do the same, just not in the same way or quickness. For an ADD person they will spend every waking hour researching about it, then eventually trying it. No joke about spending every waking hour by the way... its insane. Only a few things have stuck around for me, like Aquariumism. When I saw a pair of Sais, I really wanted to try using them. But as another member suggested, I decided to go for a martial art (empty hand) and then eventually go towards escrima then to sai. I wanted to "earn" to use them, not just play with them and then just dip like I do with everything else. I want to be in a MA because it could help teach me mentally to calm down plus keep me physically fit, kinda wierd coming from a 21 year old. I loved kick boxing when I did it until I had to stop because of an actual emergency and have missed it since... so I am returning next week, I'm really excited!
My idea was to buy a pair of sais from ebay, put them into a stand (a nice decoration on my dresser) and until the day I feel I'm ready comes.. leave them there as a reminder. What do you all think? Did any of you guys have a goal while in a MA, or caused the reason to join a MA? Thanks for reading : )

I don't believe its a newbie idea. Its actually a pretty good one. Goals and motivations are important in everything you do. Any goals you set for yourself will be useful since it will motivate you to continue on. People should keep goals for themselves no matter how far they have progressed.

You can ignore my thought though. I'm a newb also:D

G'luck with your MA training.

If you can do it, it sounds like a great idea :)

Oh, I think I got it. You wanna buy some Sai's and keep them as a motivator for you? Sounds like a good idea to me. Whatever rings your bells I suppose.

Ha, I did the same with a bokken.
(brings me to another point, do not buy a weapon you do not know how to use. to many amateurs)

Sure why not?

I had a 2 pairs of nunchucks that were for awhile used as tiebacks for curtains in my gym ...

... look to the future!!

I've had some friends who are a lot like you describe yourself. it will be a good exercise for you to pace yourself in your training, not try to be Jet Li after 2 months... hopefully that mental discipline can carry over into other arenas.

I think this is a great example of how adult study of martial arts can lead to self-improvement.

hehe thanks, its funny,m I just want to get to the level of training with sais, it just looks so much fun... all my friends actually think I am going to carry them around thinking of being a samurai bad ass, I need to get them on this site and have them see whats its REALLY about... the love, fun, devotion.. not the "I wanna be able to whoop everyone in 2 months, or I want to follow the samurai way... only the fighting"! Thanks everyone, you guys are great!!
