In Arkansas, U.S.A., on March 19th, a man took a 6-year-old girl out her yard while she was playing, and dragged her into the woods nearby. She struggled, soon broke free, and ran back home. She told her mother what happened, who in turn called the police. The man was found later and arrested. Rumor has it that the girl, while being dragged, picked up a rock and hit the man on the forehead with it, and that the police identified him later by the big bruise on his forehead.

koyo - the wee one did enough to be safe, that's all that matters. The nasty people and others like that will hopefully get what's coming to them.

Hi Lily

I worked with gangs and opened centres for them to learn guitar, drawing etc. Sometimes there would be a little girls dance class. I would see some of the older guys learing at them.Had a few incidents "asking" them to leave. It is just that the kids are so vulnerable that when I see or here of anyone trying to take advantage I tend to loose it.

I know koyo...you're the best

This issue really hits people and we've had numerous cases in Australia where paedophiles have been living near school areas, working with children etc. Privacy laws protect them and there is no accountability, talk of registers detailing their locations for the protection of children has been just that, talk.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool! ...got beat up by a 6-year-old  :D ! Cool too though is that when she went to tell her mom, the neighbors overheard and went into the woods after him with baseball bats and clubs to try to find him  . They couldn't find him though, shame!

regards koyoKoyo,

I'm sure that you could see that they were leering, and not just smiling while they watched some kids having fun. But we do now live in a society where adults can no longer act in a normal fashion around other people's children for fear of being suspected of being a paedophile. (Which is of course the fault of the real paedophiles.)

One time I saw a girl fall off her bike. She seemed to be hurt, so I started to go and see that she was OK, and saw a woman staring at me suspiciously, like I was up to no good. She couldn't move her lazy arse to see if the little lass was hurt, but she could give me a funny look! :bang:

It sometimes feels like the paedophiles have corrupted our whole society. :woo:

Johnno I couldn't agree with you more.
In this day and age soooo many people aren't comfortable in their own skin.

In Hong Kong there always seems to be a ton of young kids out with their parents, on the train, etc. All these little kids just motoring around and going for it... lol... some so small and walking they don't look like they'll make the next step. :) But just cute kids running around being cute kids.

I'm forever pinching their cheek or tugging an ear as I'm on my way to work or home or whatever... lol... the kids always get a shock and then a chuckle out of it... and surprisingly Chinese parents don't take much offense with that. And I'm 6'2" white guy with a 5 o'clock shadow and usually a busted up face. :D

I wonder how much diff. the culture makes in this case?

Are things really worse these days, or does stuff just get reported more widely? Have we always had sickos like paedophiles, or is it a modern phenomenon?

I suspect that like a lot of social problems, it's a by-product of the dysfunctional society we live in today. If things are better in China then can it stay that way as they rush headlong towards the same kind of consumer society that we have?

When I worked At the Bowling Alley where Tedesco's tiles is now, I used to see Grown men watching the little kids in not a nice way. Meanwhile the parents would be in the bar leaving their kids running around because they thought it was a a safe family place. Because it was a business and not a public place the manageress was a bit iffy about me warning them off so I used to have to do it on the quiet. But they can be anywhere and some of them you would not expect till you catch them at it.

When I hear some of these terrible news stories, it makes me wonder when things went wrong.

I've had this conversation with my mom over many years. She worked in public health and prison nursing for almost 40 years. And she's dealt with many, many people who have either been victims of abuse of this kind or have inflicted the abuse of this kind.

Her take is that it's always been around. She say's that basically it's only as society has progressed that it get's reported more and we're more aware of it. It's a bit disheartening really.

Sometimes I discount the idea by thinking... hmm.. decades of working in public health and prison nursing would make anyone a cynic... but in many ways I think she's probably not far off.

Though on the other hand she really is amazed that soooo many people medicate their kids for hyperactivity and whatnot. It just blows her away... I mean she had to deal with me and my criminal brothers... :D

So she just thinks people medicating hyper kids are just lazy parents. She'd be the first to say that parenting is just plain hard work. She knows she raised an entire family pretty much single handedly... a 12 hour prison shift and then home to tighten down the little convicts at home. :p

Oddly enough she just finished jury duty on a case of priest that they returned a conviction of guilty as charged for abusing 4 boys many years back. The boys grew up and were brave and strong enough to bring charges. The judge handed down a life in prison punishment.

For once. Thank God. :bang:

I suspect that like a lot of social problems, it's a by-product of the dysfunctional society we live in today. If things are better in China then can it stay that way as they rush headlong towards the same kind of consumer society that we have?

We still have man cases of abuse here. Some big ones lately actually.

A mix of all three, I used to say I would start asking other people if they had noticed as well, then I would say some of the local worthies I was going to ask, they would usually stomp off at that point often telling me I was getting shot, stabbed, what was coming to me etc. In their pathetic attempts to save face. Stoat the balls as they are known here have never had any doubts about what happens to them if they come to the attention of the public.

Not sure how to quote only part, but here goes...."But we do now live in a society where adults can no longer act in a normal fashion around other people's children for fear of being suspected of being a paedophile. "

I know. This is so sad. We just had a black belt and instructors' meeting last night, and our instructor told us that if only one child shows up for a class (which has happened, on occasion) we are not allowed to teach them unless their parent stays. Seeing as many parents simply drop their kids off and don't wait to see if class is "on" or not, we now have to sit with the child outside until the parents arrive to protect ourselves from allegations. It makes me really sad, especially in a place where we, as the adults, are trying to teach these children how to avoid situations where they could be hurt.

"Just put a QUOTE and a /QUOTE wrapped in square brackets on either side of the bits you want to quote, and delete the bits you don't. (They don't have to be bold - I just did that for clarity.)

If you want to show the username of the person you are quoting then put QUOTE=username in the front bit - but you don't need it in the /QUOTE bit.

Thanks for the tip! I'm still kind of new to the whole forum thing, but this one really interested me, so I had to sign up!

On edit: I think I got it this time...
