It depends what you mean by "fight."

If fight means "compete" then I say yes.
But then I would do it if there was nothing on offer too.

I said NO but I may change my mind. Is it a big trophy?

You mean in a fight as in a cage entertaining for a big fat rich guy where I have to fight to the death?
Sure! I will just kill everyone and be the king of the cage even if I am forced to kill those puny kids! :D
MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! :D
No seriously if you mean competetion then yes.

The question is purely open ended. I suppose I would do it if no one got hurt. That is the big issue for me. I would not hurt someone for money or a piece of plastic.

I personally am not in the martial arts to compete and although our school does go to certain area tournaments it is not required that we do so.
Unfortunately I haven't had too many opportunities to go to tournament ... some times when I did there were usually no other women in my particular division! Very disappointing to say the least! ... to be given a shiny trophy and not even fighting for it!
Looking forward to future tournaments to compete but for more of a personal competitive focus.... I'm looking to get a few more in for self confidence purposes and to gauge my talents outside of the arena of my dojang.

I voted yes because I have.

I voted No. I have competed twice before for trophies but it was all fun and games as a kid for TKD.
Now when I fight in tournaments and what not it's all for soul.

assuming a competitive event,
I voted yes, but... I'm not fighting because of the award. I'll fight becasue its fun and I like to do it. If I don't feel like fighting I won't just for a trophy. I might fight for money, if it was a lot, even if I didn't feel like it that day - but nobody's gonna put up any money to see me fight LOL
outside of competition
real fighting (trying to hurt somebody) for any reason other than self defense or defense of somebody weaker than you is immoral and I wouldn't do it for any reward. Unless it was my ex-roommate, I'd punch him for a dollar! haha just kidding... I'd kick the b*****d!

he worked as a cable installer, climbing poles all day. He burned his leg (3rd degree) and couldn't work for 3 months and so I let him stay on and pay me back rent once he was healed up but then 1 month after going back to work he broke his other leg and I made the same deal and so after 4 more months he got hooked on methamphetamine and wouldn't go back to work and so I kicked him out of the house and he never paid me back. A sad story really he was a good person just could not deal with that level of adversity and so threw his life away on the most horrible drug there ever was.
Actually I feel more pity than anger now so I probably wouldn't kick him (unless I thought it would make him pay me back then maybe just a little one haha).

I like money and trophies. I also like sparring against resisiting oppoents. I would be all over a grappling tourney in my city like a fat kid on a cupcake.

For a trophey? Not really.
To work with other MAs (MMA or TMA) to test my knowledge and my skills? Yes.
In a scenario where breaks can be used and there's a good chance someone is greviously injured (broken bones [exculding noses] and up)? Not intentionally.
Yes, for money and if I could sell the trophy for more money. (Hey, I'm a mercenary!)

I would just because I would enter the tournament anyways, anything else is just a bonus.

Money can't repair a blinded eye, nor can it repair a broken back or neck. Is it really worth the risk?

Give it a few years...
I'd fight for money, but never for a trophy. Seems like a waste of effort, unless there's money thrown in of course. Kinda like fighting for pride, never did get the point of that.

Yeah, but you spend the money.
What about a few nice lumps of fake marble and plastic gathering dust on your mantelpiece, so you can see what you (thought you) were? ;)

No way! You couldn't make me fight for money or trophy, even if you guaranteed I wouldn't hurt someone or get hurt. I hate performing, freeze up. I would get creamed at a tournament! I have only done two tournaments - completely froze at both. Can't stand the idea of people watching - yikes!
I could spar in a class with just classmates, but add a crowd and I am a quivering lump of jelly. I am decent in real life situations too, it is just the 'on stage' aspect of it. Feeling nauseous right now just thinking about it.

At some point further in my development, I'll probably compete in tournaments as in doing so I will have to refine and improve my techniques.
The money or trophies? Hmm, but then I'd need to find somewhere harder to compete :P.

use the money to buy a trophy. I'd fight for either, it's part personal pride, part knowing that if you really want to hone your skills and sese how good you are, you must compete against others to see your weaknesses.
You assume the risk of being hurt when you start martial arts, and if you are entering a tournament, you should be aware of the risks and moreover, good enough to know that you stand a small risk of getting maimed. Your not fighting to the death here, your opponents aren't fighting with the intention of trying to cripple you, it's not a JCVD movie.

I believe that we all have 1 thing in common.
Self-defense: a construct we achieve through the study and practice of Martial Arts. What we choose to do with it; how we choose to use it is a matter of choice. And with all matters of choice, there are always repercussions.
We are each further challenged to use our knowledge and wisdom to reflect and make the best decisions possible. Many of us allow our egos, instead of our knowledge, to influence the choices we make.

I voted no because I don't believe that competition to me is very useful to make someone a better person. The way I feel is that as soon as you incorporate a tournament into the art it makes it a sport instead of a true budo. This is of course my opinion, but that is one of the reasons I decided on aikido as the martial art for me. I don't need money or a trophy to help me feel better about my practicing, I get the pleasure of that every day when i train either in the dojo or in the hours a day I spend meditating or training even more. There are more important things in life that money and a trophy. That is of course my opinion and I do respect everyone elses. :-)
