Is there any verifiable evidence that such an art ever existed? Documents? Manuscripts etc? Would be interested to see links / references if anyone has them.

Here's a few links that might answer your questions, I know there is historical evidence and i have met Irishman James Ramsey who showed me techniques with the blackthorn that he learned from his father (posted on a previous WMA MAP post...)

I don't buy it frankly, i think the guy was calling this thing uisce beatha bata rince a while back which sounds very suspect grammatically. Someone led someone up the garden path somewhere along the line on this one IMHO

As far as I know there is no documentation for Glen Doyle's style. There's supposed to be a new book coming out at some stage that will be about the techniques etc.
