View Full Version : Gambling your life

Suppose that you could have all of your dreams come true, however there was a catch: there's a 1 in 10 chance that you would die (if you die, your dreams all don't come true:p).

Would you take this risk? If not, would you take it if it was a 1 in 20 chance of dying? 1 in 100? Or, if so, would you take worse odds, like 1 in 5?

Yes, I would take the risk at any odds.
The odds only dictate my choice of type of wish.

For example if I had a 1 in 2 chance of dieing, I would think of others. If I had a 1 in 100 chance of dieing, I would think a little closer to my life.

(I'm living on barrowed time anyway so my point of view is without fear of death)

My dreams are very simple and I will make them come true, anyway. I'd like to enjoy the journey as well as the destination, so no. I'll not take it, even if 1/infinity

I'm with Jack on this one, I wouldn't take it either. If you really want something, you should go after it. Having it handed to you takes away half the satisfaction of getting it. I'm happy with my lot, I have a warm home, food in my cupboards, money in my pocket, and a family that (somewhat) cares about me. Life can always be worse.

Once you have everything you ever wanted, what would you do with your life? I think it'd get pretty boring pretty quick, or you'd start wanting more and more.

On the other hand, I'm a very lucky person, so if I took the gamble, it'd probably pay off :p

Good take on the question Jack - couldn't agree more. Life is as much about the journey as the destination.

So no one here has dreams of a world without hunger, racism, senseless violence,,,,,? And if you do, then you think that you will accomplish this within your lifetime?

My needs are simple too, but humanity's needs are great.
I would not hesitate to gamble my life for the good of the whole.
In fact, on a more practicle level, good people do that every day.

Wants are said to be unlimited, hence why we're trying to increase the capacity of what we can produce.

To do that, you'd have to take away people's freedom of choice to do the wrong thing. Anyways, here's my question, what if your dream was to die?

6YRS ago i would have said yes i'll take those odds - but i have come to realise the journey is 90% of it(maybe more)& that much more important.

Let me change the question then. Instead of having all of your dreams come true, you got one wish...unrestricted, except for wishing for more wishes and whatnot.

Sure - THAT one I'd go for.

I wish that my children live happy productive stress free lives ending in a peacful death by natural causes at 80+ surrounded by people they love.

Does ANYONE die like that anymore?

Sure, one in 10. We KNOW we are going to die eventually. However for most of us, we do't have a 1 in a million chances of our dreams coming true. For me, I'm very very lucky to have had most of my dreams coming true as I travel thru life. If your curious maybe we could post some of our dreams in a thread about what we have had come true so far! That would be a good thread.

If it was any one unrestricted wish, then yes I would sacrifice my life if it guarenteed some great ideal.

For example; if all people could be free from their non-stop suffering, appreciate what they do have, and then approach the rest of the world with a greater idea of life and the important things (love, family, joy, compassion)

I'd die for that in an instant. If the wish was restricted to myself, then I wouldn't. :)

Dave - I like your answer. A lot.

My Grandmother always told me that you could "Wish in one hand and poo in the other. Which would fill up faster".

I love that quote.
