What kicks do you practice for MMA?

I practice just the one kick, Tai round kick to the leg (cut kick).

Also work kicking from the floor, on your back and on your side to keep away a standing opponent. Used particularly effectively by Renzo Gracie against Taktarov a few years ago.

I am one of the few fighters I see who regularly uses a side kick in MMA. It leaves the takedown open, but they have to absorb my fat foot first, and I thrive on the mat.

blah, teeps are better than side kicks! ;)

but i'm a big fan of a round kick to the head.

I train side kicks because it is a very far-reaching kick, and can be very effective in a self-defence situation... But I also train lowkicks to just above the knee(this is also very effective), and other kicks like front thrust kick and roundhouse... :) I don't like kicking to the head though, or above the ribs... You have to be a fast-kicker if you are going to do this, or this may be a good oppertunity for your opponent to do a throw or takedown... ....and we don't want that to happen!! :D

rear thai kick: to any area the opponent in front of me leaves open.
front round kick: to any area.
i train the side and front kicks, but rarely use them.
sometimes i'll goof off and throw a hook or ax kick against new guys.

Mainly Thai roundhouse and teep. I've been messing around with a spinning back kick, but I haven't used it in sparring yet (and probably won't use it often anyways, it leaves your back open).

1ONEfighting,

Do you do the side kick off of the front or rear leg?

If you do it off of the rear leg, what's the point? A teep would be quicker, do about the same damage to the same target, and wouldn't leave you so open for a takedown.

If you do it off of the front leg, how exactly do you do it? I've seen a lot of different ways so unless I know which way you're doing it I can't really say why I don't. :p

Only kicks i normally use are the teep and thai kicks. Thai kicks are great when set up with a jab, cross :D

I think kicks to the actual knee are illegal purely for safety - a side kick for exaple, flush on the knee can break it without needing much power and then the fighter's career is pretty much over. If it's not officially illegal, maybe it's just a respect thing hence why no one does it. I personally quite like popping a front kick into the upper thigh in sparring. Aim it right and it's an instant dead leg

I try not to kick higher than the waist, I usually aim for the thighs or front kick to the stomach if i got a reach disadvantage.
Yes, kicks to the knees are not allowed in some MMA events, depends on the area that running it etc.

Kicking to the knee isn't illegal in either Pride FC of UFC. It might be in smaller shows, though.

Not officially illegal according to the UFC or Pride sites, so it must be a respect thing like many Thai fighters have, although they do have a rule which states that "engaging in an unsportsmanlike conduct that causes an injury to an opponent" is illegal, so I'd imagine striking the knee deliberately would be covered by that.

side of the knee is often hit in K-1, hell any kickboxing tourney. it is not as "deadly" as some would like to think. front of the knee can be quite damaging though, and I dont think kicks to the front of the knee are allowed in most mma/kickboxing comps.

I remember in the Sakuraba vs Schembri 2 fight, Schembri was on his back and kicked Sakuraba in the knee as he lent over him. His leg shot back and made me wonder if he was going to suddenly topple over in pain, but luckly he was alright and went on to win the fight by decision.

Breaking a knee might be possible if they are standing with all of their weight on it, but very few sport fighters stand still with their weight sunk.

I Do a heap of low kicks, nothing dangeresque except for in street confrontations.... The highest kick i do is just a standing chest stomp to a standing opponent. Sidekicks over teeps.....

thai round kick
stop kick
the front jab kick. Remember when Maurice Smith used this kick and sent his opponent sailing? always a great opening kick.

i frequently use the jumping spinning ax kick in mma sparring. this is my most effective technique right before my alarm clock goes off every morning.
