Hello:

Our Master went to Yongin University in Korea. He is currently a 6th Dan Black Belt in TKD, and 5th Dan Hapkido. Does anyone here know of Yongin University and how it is regarded in Korea?

Thanks,

Steve H

Do a search on the google web site. It should give you plenty of references.

very highly!

It's probably THE martial arts and sports sciences university in Korea. But I am biased; most of my teachers are either graduates of the tkd department there or are still studying for their degrees.

Their skills are amazing, and all our teachers have been good at teaching as well, even though they are all young. I went out there once and watched a demo, it was awesome. A lot of the students are in the national demo team. I guess you have a good teacher!

Many graduates of Yong-In keep the name (franchise) it out to their schools as well. My TKD master in Korea is a graduate of Yong-In and in my personal experience he provided me with a good educational experience in TKD.

We are fortunate enough to have two masters at our school, both Yong-In graduates. One is the owner of the school and a former Korean Tiger (there are 3 schools in our area with the same name that are a joint venture between 3 yong in tigers, hece the name Tiger Martial Arts). The other is young (26) and will be moving on as soon as he is ready for his own school. Its true that several keep the name, we have a school, Yong-In TKD College, near us. We just competed in the 1st annual Yong-In international tournament in Boston in October, the demo team was there and they were awesome.

I was looking into the Yong-in for the future but you have to be one smart 'mo' to get into there.(plus I'm not in TKD anymore.

Actually, no, you do not need to be 'smart.'

Taekwondo majors (or sports department students) are actually ranked at bottom end of the totem pole when it comes to academics. However, you MUST be spot on with your physical skills in order to get in, not to mention fluent in Korean.

Yong-in Univ. does have a good TKD programme, however, I am partial to Kyounghee Univ. (Suwon campus) as the leading univ. for TKD studies.

I did go up against a Yong-in player for sparring when I took my 3rd degree test back in '97...or '98, well, whenever. It is safe to say he nearly lopped off my head while testing.

If you are wanting to train in Korea, I suggest looking into S1 (Samsung One) TKD training facility. Only players attend, and you have to be good in order to be accepted into the gym. I've blanked on the GM's name, but he was Korea's TKD coach for the 88 Olympics. Nice guy, he's made me laugh....

Cheers,

Dae-han

I was talking more on the school it self aside from the TKD side.
If I moved to Korea I'd probably want to stay in one area to attend college and do the TKD.

But now I'm not going to do it at all after my fall out in TKD. :p

The Samsung GM is Kim Sei Hyok ? The completely grey-haired guy? (rare in Korea!) who put out the series of sparring video tapes 'Coach Kim's sparring methods' (they are well worth watching).

Fair enough, but I can help you out if you do decide to come to Korea for tertiary education.

I've been teachng in Korean universities for 6 years now, and have many colleagues at other universities. I do know where one should go, depending on your background, and desired field of study.

Email me if you are interested.

Shoosh,

Dae-han
