Hello
I'll be moving to Edinburgh in a few weeks time and would be very grateful if anyone could give me some info on martial arts schools/teachers in the area.
I'm living in London at the moment and have been learning Lau Gar Kung Fu, so It'd be cool to find a Lau Gar teacher in Edinburgh, but I'm also interested in learning more about all kinds of martial arts, particularly other kung fu styles as well as tai chi.
I'd really appreciate it if someone could advise me!

Cheers

Liz

Hi Liz,
Welcome to the forum!
There's loads of us Edinburgh folk on the forum (well 5). I don't know anywhere doing lau gar but I do Wing Chun if you're interested and me and the other 4 all do Shodokan aikido together.
No doubt the rest will get their comments in too once they've read your post.

Hooray!!! Someone else to join our happy throng!!! :D You are cordially invited to join the Heriot-Watt Shodokan Aikido Club! Our home page can be found at http://www10.brinkster.com/zephyr1/aikido/ which will let you know our training times. A couple of our members train in Lau Gar, a third studies Wing Chun so I'm sure that they'll get you involved in those as well. We are also trying to get a bit of a link with a Lau Gar club in Irvine for the occassional training session through there (home of the infamous Andy Murray and heroic Greyghost (aka Fraser) who are regular users of this forum). When you add to this the fact that one of our dan grades is also a tai chi instructor and I think you'll agree we've got all your needs pretty well covered!!!

As you've probably guessed from what I said above we have a pretty good cross section of MAists. When you include FreeForm (aka Cuddles) you introduce judo, karate and taijitsu to the mix as well!! Have a look at the thread Greyghost and Melanie go to Edinburgh in the General Discussion section for the view of a couple of others who've come and trained with us. We also have a good social side to the club with lots of nights out drinking - though getting hammered isn't mandatory (no Fluffy it's NOT, you just choose to every time!), cinema trips, Christmas meals, there's soon to be a paintballing session and the occassional link up with other martial arts clubs. I personally believe that these are all down to an excellent social secretary! :D We have also started an annual cross-training event where we get a number of other instructors and students from other arts and spend a bit of time learning a little bit about each of them.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could advise me! I hope that that has been of use to you. If you want to chat with any of our members then you will find Tintin (who is our instructor), FluffyDoc, Spike and myself are all members of this forum. I'm sure that they'd all be happy to give you any other details you might need. :D

Oh, before I forget...welcome to the forum!!!!!:D

Hopeless Greyghost...your opportunity to put accross a 'good' impression in order to recruit and you say that... (Hahahaha)

If its any consolation Liz. I have attended one class of Lau Gar in Irvine and have found that Greyghost (Fraser) is professional, profficient and very easy to approach. He explains things clearly and is an excellent technician of his art. Saying that though...so is Tintin (Martin) of Shodakan Aikido in Edinburgh. You'll be hard pressed to decide between them, but definately check them both out. :) I am expecting to visit Scotland again within the next few months too, if you get chance we can meet up too?

Hi Liz,

You should definitely check out the aforementioned invitations. In terms of Lau Gar in Scotland, there are both BKFA, and non BKFA organisations in the Edinburgh area.
I would like to ask your grade, and your previous club and Sifu please, so I can best work out what to reccomend to you.
In the Kung Fu forum, there is a Lau Gar check in thread. Just so you know who's who.

Welcome to the forum, I hope we get a chance to meet, when you arrive in our fine land.

Regards

Andy

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all your replies and advice. Sounds like there's a lot going on - I'd definately like to check out some of the classes suggested, and when I finally get up to Edinburgh, and get over the stress of moving house (or maybe to help me get over the stress of moving house) I'd also like to check out some of that drinking that was mentioned too...

I was kind of hoping that I wouldn't have to! My strategy was to get Liz to fall in love with us all before she realised that our drinking club had an aikido problem!

Nobody resembles a drunken Scot quite as well as you do FluffyDoc :D

Tell me Liz....what is your view on Captain Birdseye?

With regards to Captain Birdseye, I don't really have any strong feelings either way, but you gotta love the guy's makeup artist - one minute the guy looks aout 70 with a big white beard, next time you see him he's clean shaven and looking 40 years younger with a tan Richard Madely would be proud of. I could do with a makeup guy like that for those (very rare, you understand - I wouldn't want to give the wrong impression) mornings after. Either that or a big white beard to hide behind.....

Not sure what to make of that reply...she could be a spy for Captain Birdseye.......

What do you think silver?.......

Benefit of the doubt ...or death by banana fritter.

Benefit of the doubt for now....I'll keep a close eye on her when she arrives in the capital of God's country! Trust no one (except those people who are trustworthy!!) and we shall prevail.

She may be pretending that she likes CB so that they accept her into their cult and then she will be able to bring them down from within!!
.....or she may be pretending to pretend to like CB so that WE accept her into the resistance thinking that she will then be accepted into their cult so that she can bring them down from within when really she is wanting to bring US down from within!!!!
....or maybe she's pretending that she's pretending to pretend that she likes CB so that WE think...no, THEY...no wait it's so that...doh...my head hurts! Why does espionage have to be so complex?

Possibly she is unaware of the atrocities caused by CB....tell her the truth GG...can she handle the truth? Will she take the red pill or the blue pill? The suspenders....I mean suspense, is killing me!:D

Liz,

I'm an ex Lau Gar practitioner (from down souf as well) and I have transferred recently to a Wado Ryu Karate club in Edinburgh which is very similar in terms of its balance of Sparring / Traditional Kata. I'd say it's worth popping in for a look anyway if you dont find a Lau Gar club in your area.

Club trains at Meadowbank Mon 7:00pm - 9:00pm, Saturday 4:30 - 6:30 (not definite on the Saturday times).

I do actually quite fancy having a shot at Aikido after reading 'Angry white pyjamas'. Might pop along one day to check it out.

Our own particular brand of aikido tends not to be quite as harsh, we let people off the mats if they have broken bones....once they have asked permission from Sensei to be excused:D

If you fancy coming along then.....here comes the plug......

WE TRAIN ON TUESDAY NIGHTS 7.15 'TIL 9.15 AND SUNDAY 1.15 TO 3.15 AT THE HERIOT-WATT UNI SPORTS CENTRE

If you need directions (car or bus) then PM me, Tintin, FluffyDoc, FreeForm or Spike. This Sunday would be a good time to train (HINT, HINT)!

Liz, when do you arrive in the capital of God's country?

I think the current plan is that we'll be in Edinburgh from Sunday 11th August, cus I have to start my new job next day, so I might try to get to your training session on the sunday after that - as long as you promise to be gentle with me :)

I promise to be so gentle that you won't even know that I'm in the same room...hold on a sec.....I won't be!!! I'll be on holiday in South Africa so will catch up with you when I get back for the training session on Sunday 25th :D
