I'm just begining capoeira, I've been practicing capoeira the basics. How long did it take most of you to master the basics of Capoeira?

Depends on the individual. Could be from 6 months up to 2 years. Depends on how well you pick up on it, how its being taught to you and how often you train.:)

Actually, I think it is a bit longer. I think between 5-7 years. That's when the capoerista stops learning new techniques, for the most part (it doesn't mean he has quit totally) and starts perfecting the aspects of his game.

It's individual and reliant on many variables.

Just do it and find out how long it takes you.

Motivation, perseverance, athleticism (...which isn't always on tap in the beginning; it is often gained in the process), devotion, and patience. Fellow Capoeiristas, if I've missed any key elements/criteria, please feel free to add to my concise list.

hahaha :D

You picked the wrong art if you think capoeira can be learned in 2 years. Capoeira is a long art...think of it like Aikido. It takes many years to learn just the basics and then you have to learn the music too. I hope you were also planning on learning the whole art and not just the movements!

I could show you the movements in 1 hour but it would take you years to learn them because they are body memory techniques. The only way to learn them is by repetition. I have been doing capoeira for 10+ years and I am constantly learning the basics. Every time I think I know a technique I discover something new.

I'm not trying to discourage you but it will probably take 2 years just to learn the ginga. I'm not talking about just doing the movement but getting the feeling and freedom of the movement. Most people are static when they first learn the ginga and too rooted.

Anyway take care and good luck. If you want something to do on the side then I would suggest MT.

You can learn to play chess in a day...but you still wouldnt know how to play chess.

Capoeira is alot like that.

I want to know how they grade you? Is it like karate when you have to remember the moves?

You are graded on your ability to see the game (..i.e...your vision), your creativity, etc. You are graded throughout the year by your mestre, and that is how he assesses which cordao you will receive at the next batizado/troca de cordoes.

i dont think theres any aspect of capoeira you can just one day say ...there, mastered, tick a box and move on.

So the discussion of how long it takes would seem null.

I think the question is, what do you want to achieve?

If you intend to learn an art in it's entirity, you cannot set a timescale, it is permanently ongoing, it is a lifetime of dedication, regardless of the art you wish to practice.

What do you think happens once you have learnt the basics anyway? What is the rush, it willl take as long as it takes, regardless of the art it is dependant on the individual and at the end of the day you will only get out of it what you put in.

If you are doing it on the side of something else then just accept it may take a long time.

Lots of love
