I would like to know if i have been doing my workouts wrong or what.

Recently i had a knee injury i bent my knee the wrong way wall moving some heavy weight. as it went the other way i caught it with my hands an stoped it from completly hyperextending! I still had a bad knee for a while. Went to doctor for two months did not have the fluid sucked out of the knee used pill 3 months of pills just to get it down. The Physical Therapist i went to had me do these exercises that actually after 3 months of not using my right leg built back the muscles. Here kinda is what i did:

In different ways like i lay down flat lift leg sit up. The real workout question is that when i work out i have never held each exercise like 5 seconds an then go all the way to relaxed when i do a single rep to allow the muscle to relax completely.

The question: Should you do what ever the workout is with hold for so much time then a completely relax to help build the muscle stronger for each rep?
