MAP Raising Money For Charity (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44720&highlight=map+raising+money+for+charity)

Time: 10:00 to TBC

3 matted areas as before. Hall and insurance sorted.

Now need to sort out the following:
Committee
Constitution
New film crew
Sponsorship/funding
Design T shirts, posters, programmes
Instructors!

Jang Bong and Johnny X - I haven't forgotten you both

Things I have in mind to see this coming event (probably won't happen but I can dream):

MMA
Gatka
Tai Chi
Kendo
CKD
Ninjitsu
Combat Submission
Hapkido
FMA
Shorin Ryu Karate
RBSD

INSTRUCTORS! PLEASE CONTACT ME DIRECT IF YOU CAN HELP WITH ANY OF THE ABOVE CLASSES OR INDEED OTHERS!!!

This event is expected to draw a "younger" crowd this time as its a bit fluffier this time compared to heart disease and cancer. I will be asking every instructor if they can cater their classes for under 16s but thus far most classes in the past have been for over 16s. It's nice to have a day for the grown-ups to act like kids for a day as well I guess. I will advise what the instructor says before and on the day so you can then use your own judgement. :)

I hope you can make it :)

Sounds excellent! As I have a long time off work coming up from January onwards, let me know if there are any (relatively simple) tasks for me to work on while I recover.

I'll do my best to be there again this year.

...I hope you can make it :)

I haven't seen you (IIRC and haven't got you mixed up with someone else :p) since the Tung-Fu meet way back in 2003, or stump since the Heathrow MMA thing, so would be cool to have a chat and roll again. Of course, I'm currently planning to be at a Bullshido Throwdown in June, but not set the date yet so might be in a different month or weekend in June. Would also be interesting to check out a MAP meet in person (especially if there is some MMA and/or BJJ) - I've been to Tung-Fu, Cyberkwoon, Heathen Hangout and Bullshido meets (no axe murderers yet ;) ), but never MAP.

Is there a train station nearby that's easy/cheap to get to from London?

Be great to see you again. There is Bracknell Train station about 20 mins walk or 5-10 mins taxi - I expect we shall the have MAP taxi again. It was really useful last time - some one stands at the station with a sign saying MAP Meet Taxi and in ya hop - you'll probably recognise the driver slidey :D

Without meaning to be cloyingly sycophantic, if you were teaching that would motivate me considerably to make sure I get along to this. It looks like I won't be having a DVD this year. I can't find a better quote than £2,000 for a crew and I don't have time to look for media students (which I think would produce a very god film for us) If someone else wants to try for me (Johnno... :D ) than i won't object. I have still not found any money either...so, so far it looks like I am paying everything myself again :( But I'll do it anyway...'cos I'm crazy... :)

Mel I certainly know that feeling! ;)

Perhaps you can downsize a wee bit.

Certainly t-shirts should be provided for attendees and you can see how many you need to order by setting up a PayPal account and have them reserve their order beforehand ... so that will take care of that cost.

As far as filming the MAP meet ( that is a sore subject with me ;) ), certainly you can find someone that day that wouldn't mind capturing the highlights of the day with their digicam and find someone who is skilled at editing that into a good DVD for you.

MAP meets are always a memorable day for everyone :)

I would like to find out if you would be interested in changing the format slightly for this years event. It has been suggested that I should have less instructors and more time for each class as below (below is just an example - not what is happening!)

Below you can have 8 styles and have two classes of the same style so you get a second chance to have a go at a class - lets say each class is 50 mins long.

MMA KungFu FMA Kendo

KSW Karate JuJitsu TaiChi

KungFu JuJitsu KSW MMA

Kendo Taichi FMA Karate

Or would you rather do the format that we have done for the past 2 years

50 min sessions of 12 different styles

MMA KungFu FMA

TaiChi JuJitsu KSW

Kendo CKD Karate

Gatka Capoeira Aikido

What would you prefer?

Either let me know on this thread or PM and email me. I'd just like your opinion. May not mean I'll do it but its getting your opinion innit... :D

I suppose it depends on what classes are on.
If there are 2 you really want to go to and they class in option 2, option 1 would be better from a participants point of view. On the flip side option 2 gives more variation.
I guess in terms of getting instructors and organisation option 1 would be easier.

Personally I would be happy with option 1 - still get to do a day of 4 different things :)

Speaking personally, I'd be coming for the MMA, meaning ideally I'd want as much of that as possible. So, I vote for option 1.

I certainly planning on it. Depends on whether or not I get the time off. We're only allowed 3 people off per team at any one time so there's a lot of competition for holidays. I'm booking the time just as soon as I figure out how to work the new electronic fangled system. It used to be so simple. Pen, paper form, fill in, hand to TL who sits just the other side of the room. Ten meters away at most.

I'll keep you posted :D

Any possibility of BJJ? Not sure who would be closest to Bracknell - maybe Marcio Gomes in Brighton (he was at the Brighton Throwdown, charged us £10 each for showing: might be interested in doing this too). Or possibly one of the guys at Roger Gracie's - the Academy itself isn't all that far from Bracknell (about 35miles, according to Google Local), so if any of the black belts live near by, they might be interested.

You could ask on the Facebook group (http://warwick.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2235801790) - Jude is on Facebook now, although then again, wouldn't absolutely have to be a black belt, considering its BJJ. Could be some of the purples and browns would be interested, or even blues (I know Oli has done classes before, and he posts here (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/member.php?userid=8170) occasionally).

Heh - more supply and demand. Aren't all that many BJJ instructors around. Also, big difference between McDojo (commercial and out for cash) and bullshido (teaching crap): possible to be the former without being the latter. BJJ has always been expensive, but you get what you pay for. ;)

Still might be worth asking any BJJ belts above white we've got on here, especially if they happen to live near Bracknell. Plenty of blues who are capable of teaching, particularly if its only a 50min session which would most likely be pretty basic and introductory.

Hi All,

I do hope that any instructors reading this will give their time to the MAP Meet...

I will be instructing there, teaching the Tai Chi Eight Move Energy Form.

Without wishing to sound too pompous (Moi ????) I give my time to Mel because she's good people - and please note that I don't even like the charity she is supporting this year - However I'll be there just like previous years and I'll be paying the entrance fee too... Why? Because I only teach for one session and the fee is way cheap for the pleasure of learning at the other sessions.

Hope to see YOU there too.

All the best.

Robert.

Hi All,

This will be my first MAP event and I have been asked to teach a session by Mel, thankyou Mel. (paperwork will be with you in a day or 2).`

I will present classical Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate, if that is of interest to any of you feel free let me know anything specific you would like to train, if not it will be core principles applicable to self defence.

interestingly the Bracknell location is where the Honbu of my first karate association is based, so I hope to meet some of the BSKA teachers and students, that I beleive still train there!

I also will be going back to Basingstoke to train with my first Sempai on the friday night so this weekend looks to be a trip down memory lane.

You don't actually have to demonstrate anything if you don't want. Just turn up in any sort of training gear and join in the various beginner-level classes.

I've never seen a true 'cudgel' - would the techniques be directly transferable to a hook-handle walking stick? Count me in :)

Tommy-2guns...
19-Apr-2007, 10:22 AM
The term cudgel is kind of open it could be anything from a stick to a heavy club like weapon, but normally from my what i gather its of walking stick length of approximate eskrima baston width.sometimes done with a guard for the hand made from leather or wicker.

I saw on earlier comment there maybe a lot or some around or under the 16 years old age.
Are there any seniors going on the course? I can train with
Not meaning anything against junior members!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If by senior you mean "old"/not "young"; that would include me.

Melanie
22-Apr-2007, 07:45 AM
I'll be honest with you Black Belt - with the line up I have yet to confirm - I can't imagine many under 16's will be coming. I tried but this event is just not for "juniors" which is nice in one way - means the grown ups get a day out to play :)

I don't forsee any problems, in fact from past experience I expect that it will be mostly adults anyways.

There's some material I won't teach to under 16s, that just means that I won't teach it, as Mel wants this to be age inclussive.

Just to confirm, I can print the Official Programme for the event at the usual cost. ;)

I may be able to get down there on the day too.

I'm hoping to make it this year.
It's going to be a long trek, as I live about half a mile away!

I haven't read the whole thread, but is there and age restriction?
I'd like to have the option of bringing my eldest boy along - he's 13, taller than me, and a 1st kyu karate.

Melanie
02-May-2007, 04:43 PM
There is no age restriction but some instructions maybe have an age limit - this will be clarified on the day - some may though just not do certain stuff - as its not suitable for a "younger" person to try or know. Unfortunately its a an area I just can't get around. But it will be VERY clear on the day. not much help - but honest...

If there's any videos being recorded, post them up on youtube. That's what youtube is for. ;)

Then I could watch you all, and wear a t-shirt or like a sign hanging down that has your username on it. :p

I'll be umm staying where I am, I guess. Unless if somebody wants to drag me out. Then I could bring some name tags if that were the case. :D

Ladies and gents, please tell your clubs and friends about this event. This may well be my last event as an organiser as I cannot find any funding for this event and this year everything has conspired against me! I cannot promise an event next year as I simply cannot afford it like this!

So please make every effort to come this year!

Many thanks.

Hi Melanie

Am I right in thinking that you are reimbursed any money that you have forked out setting up the meeting, from the takings on the day.

I hope the answer is "Yes", because that's only fair and proper.

Cheers.

Melanie

Nope - I have not taken a penny in the past two years - if I had I would only have handed over just over £200 last year :D The year before was a bit cheaper...

 That doesn't sound right ...... or fair.

IMHO, the 'meet' should meet the cost of the meet. :woo:

The point of the meets is to make money for charity, (however much or little), not bankrupt the organiser. :(

Sam
10-May-2007, 11:53 AM
Im with Johnny on this one. Putting your effort into it is one thing Mel but your own money is a different matter.

Overall by not covering your expenses the charities MAP could help in the future will lose out because as you've said you can't and in our opinion shouldn't continue to do it.

Donate small or donate none.

10-May-2007, 12:36 PM
I agree totally with the above posters.

I am sure most of us have helped out with things before where there has been a very small cost for a few telephone calls and postage which is reasonable but anything more than this should be met from the proceeds of the event with any surplus being a bonus for a chosen charity.

Exactly. In the past when I've organised MAP Meets I've either obtained EVERYTHING for free, or when I've paid for halls out of my own pocket I've always reclaimed the cost from the takings (minus my entry fee of course ;) ).

Mel, I think you're being very silly.

Melanie
10-May-2007, 01:07 PM
I can see your points - I am budgeting for this so its not coming out in one big go. Its nice to contribute sizably to a charity though and its made such a difference. I have not biatched about it because it matters to me that these charities are supported. I may consider doing it again if I can £500 at least for funding. It's not much but no one wants to give it to me, go figure??

Melanie

Altruism is great, in theory, and I commend your attitude. But if the entry fee needs to go up a little bit to ensure you aren't reduced to surviving off of peanut butter sandwiches 3 times a day, I don't see a problem ;)

Vimtoforblood

I'm agreeing with everyone else on this.

For a good day out,
getting together with other MAists,
learning a few new things/trying different things out,
and contributing to charity....

£30?

shoshinkan
10-May-2007, 03:16 PM
thinking about it I have no idea how much a place costs for the day, could you confirm Mel, it might make sense to advertise the ammount so people come prepared.

once thats sorted the Neeter Marketing machine will kick in..................

You and I must live in different financial worlds :( When I have more coming in than I have going out then I may look at things this way - but in the meantime you are more than welcome to my TIME, which I don't have a great deal of but at least it's mine to give away :)

It looks like we'd all rather have you covering your costs and fixing these events into the future, than having to stop doing it because you can't afford to pay for things that the meet-finance should be taking care of. I'm sure the charity understands this as well. ;)
