My vote goes for katana since I'm a iaido nut, but axe eh? Throwing axe might be pretty cool. Is there such an art even? I remember theres throwing axe guys in age of empire 2.

Katana is the coolest! I'd like a nice one just for the hell of it but good ones are a few thousand!?

Most usable weapon is still the sticks!

Definatly nunchucks. Lots of thing you can do, cheap, impressive looking and compact.

Kof_Andy
26-Oct-2003, 09:47 PM
Yeah nunchucks are also easy and too popular. I did that for a year and got bored with it, cause is just self practice you cant really spar. Just about anybody knows some stuff on it, I much perfer a unique weapon that aims for combat and also has a art side to it.

The franks (a Germanic group setteling in what is France today, in the final stages of the West Roman Empire) were supposedly using throwing axes, but the source for this info is somewhat dubious.

and a 10 rd box magazine. The Argentines have had a 12 ga rifle grenade for a decade or more. Scaling up a round is easy, scaling it down is difficult. 20mm AA brass is all over the SW US desert, from the military strafing and air to air practice. The primer pocket can be sleeved to take a shotgun primer, and the case can be shortened to fit the length of the gun's action. A 2 oz projectile, made of aluminum and PETN is moving about 600 fps.

A spring loaded firing pin is mounted inside of the projectile. At its front is a primer, with lead Azide detonating powder around it. A notch in the side of the firing pin and a cross mounted, spring loaded notched "saftey pin' make the ammo safe to handle. The cross pin has a brass head that rubs on the inside of the barrel as the projectile is launched. At exit of the muzzle, the safety pin is propelled sideways out of the projectile, and the round detonates on impact, to about 150m.

This round has a nearly 100% lethal burst radius of 1 meter, and is 50% lethal at 2 meters from the impact. Half an oz of PETN is no joke, when there's some fragment of metal available for it to "throw". One rd into a car door or window, everyone inside of the vehicle is a casulty. This thing can even "reach" around a corner ( a few feet) You can make it detonate on the ground, slightly past the corner, and the blast will get a guy who is using that cover.

depends on what you will be doing.

fighting a group of unarmed assailants, nunchaku.

fighting one or more armed assailants with intent to kill, katana most assuredly.

practicality will outlive desire in any situation.

personal preferences that lay outside of the choices:

2) a pair of bahi "pambali ng buto" (bone breakers)
3) a close node rattan baston (like the one pat gave me)
4) an original bientenuebe lemery balisong
5) a pair of rattan bastons
6) a lead pipe
7) anything i can get my hands on

I'm going to have to say the staff because even if it breaks in half you still have two good size sticks to fight with. Whereas(sp?) if a katana or nunchuka breaks you are just out of luck(unless you really want to cut up your hand with that handleless blade)

Probably a pair of sais. they move swiftly and elegantly. and if you know the moves it would take out a katana or a bo or nunchaku. and for anyone who things diff about the nunchaku refer to fumio demuras book - Sai: Karate Weapon Of Self-Defense. the last couple of pages have sparrign techniques against the chuks.

It should probably be said that I don't really favor weapons, it's much more than I favor weapon sets.

Still, if I have to pick one thing, it would be my connection with the environment. A sheet of paper and a grapple hand combination work really nicely, not to mention condiment shakers, chopsticks, paper clips, even a teddy bear can be used well by a pint-size judo kid. Throw the bear, throw the guy.
I even love a MacGuyver one I invented: chewing gum and a sewing needle. If the gum has gotten hard, stick the needle in your mouth, through the round wad of gum, and spit it out at the guy. Feels a lot like a blowgun.

As for the sets I mentioned, here are a few:

I love the fan and thrower set -bo-shuriken, caltrops and powders- it's a great non-lethal system that fits into my playful nature (playful as in styles like drunken-boxing, capoeira, monkey-kungfu, etc.). Hey, I'm the guy that invented the "bunny kung-fu" set as a gag and suddenly discovered it was actually quite effective the more I worked on it. I don't plan on spreading it beyond a gag, but I wouldn't mind the temptation to whip it out for fun now and then against a person who spends way too much time standing in one place.

For more serious attitudes however, give me a straight-sword and sleeve-bow; dagger-tipped three sectional staff and monkey-kung fu.

Style sets I would *love* to be a master of for serious attitudes: triple dagger juggling style (seriously is real); rat-tail spear with sword-like spear head; the strip-armor (strategically located bars like gauntlets, shin gards, side bars, etc. which maximize movement but also give the ability to parry blades and bars with the body if done correctly), exploding pellets, and internal-to-hard kung fu set (soft style that empowers hard strikes).

Style sets I would *love* to be a master of for more playful attitudes: chopstick styles; tonfa, and who knows what else.
In general though, I honestly do not like anything with a direct killing potential like a sword, dagger, axe, etc. Basically, if you give it to a random idiot and they can kill with it first shot, no thanks. Put an attacker into a hospital if it comes down to it, but I refuse to take a life. I will always fight with honor and respect, but I train to level the playing field against the opponent who intends to take my life, and distraction forms I find far more favorable than death forms. And they're always playful.

Good Times,
-Savage Insight

p.s. It is my wish however that I knew how better to use the eye-level staff. I carved a friend from white ash wood and have loved it since, however, I simply have run out of creativity with it, and am sincerely wishing I knew it better.

I love any and all weapons, but I actually use nunchaku or gurkha kukris the most, because I usually carry one or the other with me at all times (legally, of course :) ). I am proficient with most weapons, accept for those three sectional staffs. I also have a thing for projectile weapons, such as firearms or bows, but nunchaku or gurkha kukris are what use the most, out of convinience.

I'm not really into Asian weaponry, but a katana is a nice sword, and the staff is very practical. Many European masters considered the staff to be the best overall weapon.

Personally, I prefer the european longsword over all. It's fast, light, and generates amazing power, and as far as swords go, it's very versatile. The pommel and cross are useable like a warhammer, and in half-sword grip, has a plethora of other techniques available.

I also love the rapier... such an elegant civillian weapon. Both for formal duels and back-alley brawls, the rapier is a very useful civillian sidearm.

I find sword & buckler to be a lot of fun as well, but I'm only a raw beginner in it. I like being able to conceal my sword behind my buckler, and the way the buckler can "dance" around your sword arm.

I like the European cruciform sword as well. Many people claim that the Katana is the ultimate sword, but it is only the ultimate sword for a certain style of use. The European swords are just as powerful in certain situations.

As far as Asian weapons go, I prefer either Kama or Sai.

Hi Everyone!
I may not have said this when I started, but the cane REALLY is a great weapon. BEST-its legal! You can't take numchukaus, swords and bo staffs (maybe a bo, but people look at you funny) on a plane or down the street. Its practical, and can do SERIOUS damage if used properly. I'm STILL learning , and it took a while for me to respect the cane because I didn't always enjoy having to use one. :) The cane has similar strikes to those weapons I listed above.
So, I vote for the cane!
