The Grudge 2
David Cheng

When someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage... a curse is born. The curse gathers in that place of death. Those who encouter it will be consumed by its fury.

So begins the 2006 remake of the 2003 Japanese movie 'Ju-On 2' which is the sequel of the 2004 remake of the original Japanese movie 'Ju-On'. Got that? Good. :D

The movie picks up soon after the events of the first movie with Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) hospitalised and the prime suspect in the 'murder' of her boyfriend. Karen's mother is understandably concerned by this and sends her other daughter, Aubrey (played by Amber Tamblyn), to bring her home, despite the two sisters having had an 'off-screen' falling out with one another.

So off she goes to Japan to see her sister who is rather unfortunately dispatched by the vengeful ghost of Kayako Saeki (Takako Fuji) - the focal point of the curse/grudge.

Without further ado, Aubrey teams up with Japanese reporter Eason (played by the obviously Chinese Edison Chen who's credits include the awesome 'Infernal Affairs') who is researching the story leading up to the burning down of the house by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the first movie.

Together they meet up with a Japanese folklore expert, before Kayako claims one of them (the grudge claims many in this movie) leaving the other to piece together the story in order to stop the grudge.

The movie weaves in out and of several plotlines, one involving the Davis family as detailed above, the other a bunch of school girls at a Japanese international school and a family in Chicago (the latter two actually takes place some 2 years after Kayako was murdered - confused, you might be :D ). Evidently, burning down the house wasn't enough as it just released the grudge onto an unsuspecting world!

There are several 'scares' in the film, mostly cheap ones with ghostly figures of Kayako and her son suddenly appearing. Apparently this was enough to scare the woman behind us in the cinema who screamed, let out several expletives and cried real tears.

The movie, like the first remake, is watchable but simply not scary, having said that, if you enjoyed the first one you'll probably enjoy this one. It's simply more of the same but without the eerieness and sense of dread in the Japanese originals...
