Hello all
I have never been in any street fight, male or female but I wondered what you think you would or have done if you were attacked by a woman?
Would your technique or tactics change?
Does the hair pulling and clawing with nails really normally happen?
Just curious...

Hi Melanie,
I'd like to think I would attempt to overpower a women and restrain her. I don't think that I could hit a women hard unless she was threatening my life, or that of someone close to me.
I'm not sure if this is the question you are asking though.

I am a woman, so I would fight her like I would a man, specially if she is threatening my life or that of loved ones.

I suppose this question is actually more directed at women on the forum more than men - but obviously imput from both genders would be appreciated :)
What I am trying to get at to be honest is most of the training that is taught in martial arts is against men. Men normally don't have long nails and they normally don't direct their first bit of pain to hair - like women do. I have seen two 'cat-fights' now and both times these women really did behave like vicious cats, clawing each other and trying to take enormous clumps of each other out.
Men will use strength as much as anything else when fighting but women (from what I have seen) are cunning and particularly vicious.
Just wanted to know what others have seen or done in the past and would we use the "techniques" from MA on women as they are not normally as physically strong as men and may well need less of an inducement to stop them from doing something we don't like.

I have seen ladies get into it and i have been in the middle of stopping a fight. For what i have seen a woman is more ruthless than a guy is. A lot of guys will throw a lot of punches and roll around on the ground, but when i have seen ladies fight they go all at it and it is as hard as anything to pull them apart. i would rather get in the middle of most guys fighting that i would a group of girls. ( thats just what i have seen around here )
Back to the Question:
Me being me i would mostlikely have to use the idea of fighting without fighting, such as a lot of sidestepping and holds to make her want to stop.

If a person attacks me I will defend myself - gender has nothing to do with it. I'm all for equality in all apsects of life.
I have only "fought" a woman once. It was back in my Karate days (mid 80's) and this female black belt thought it was funny to kick the guys in the nuts during "controled" sparring (I was a green belt at the time). I took the 1st one (nearly threw up), managed to dodge the 2nd, and when the 3rd came I blocked it and kicked her back hard between the legs - she dropped like a stone. Then I got a roasting of the Sensei for hurting a woman! Sheeesh. She was a bully & I told her so.
As far as I'm concerned I will deal with the threat level in a reasonable manner. If a weaker, smaller individual attacks me with not much chance of me being hurt I will deal with that threat with composure & restraint. If the threat is high due to size, weaponry or mindset I will deal with it with extreme predudice - like I said above - gender is not a factor.
A knife thrust will kill you no matter who is holding the knife - Dead is dead. I was once attacked by a 10 year old boy with a knife - but that's another story :D

Aw Ok then...
I was walking through the council estate where I used to live. This was about 1988. I'd just been to the chippy and was walking along eating my chilli & chips when these two kids walked up to me and demanded my food. I told then to go forth in a somewhat reproductory fashion - so the bigger kid (10 year old - but big for his age) said "Look - just give me the fu***** chips or I'll gut you" and pulled what looked like a big kitchen knife.
So - I gave him the chips - in the face. Followed by a hard footsweep. He landed face down on the pavement and suddenly changed from aggressive would be murderer back into a little kid crying for Mummy. I felt pretty bad after the event.
About 6 months later the same kid broke into a pensioner's flat & beat her with a poker to within an inch of her life - he took her pension book and about £10 in cash. He went to borstal for it and came out at 16 a hardened criminal with usefull skills he'd learned inside. Since then he's been locked up for rape, drug dealing and is currently doing time for armed robbery.

I agree with Yoda- gender has nothing to do with it. If you attack me, I'm going to retaliate. If
I can't control you, I'm gonna stop you by hurting you.

I guess I'm not a typical "girly" fighter. The heck with the "cat" fighting. She hits me, and I'll hit her back. Of course, I am not male, so she b**ch-slaps me, she'll get it back :D But I was always taught (by my dad, not MA) to never start a fight, but finish it. Which means, never hit them first, but if they hit you, f**k'em up :D (the red-neck way hehehehe). I was also taught "dirty" fighting by my dad. Being a female, he wanted his daughters to know how to fight, so he taught us.

Thanks Matt :) Yea, I was allowed to fight if the other person hit me first hehehehehe. Even if I got suspended for fighting. My dad would ask :
"Did you start it?"
"No, he/she hit me first."
"Ok, did ya hit him/her back?"
"Yes. I wasn't going to take that crap."
He'd smack my hand for saying crap, then tell me job well done for what I did :D

OK, this is going to sound off the wall coming from me, but I can say from experience that unless she is armed and means to take my life I will do nothing other than get beaten. Maybe that sounds sexist but I was raised to espect females and certainly not to strike them, even to defend myself. But after my ex gf stabbing me, I will restrain a female that comes at me with anything near to a weapon (screwdrivers especially)

Hi there,
I think most girls resort to cat fighting because they have never been in a fight before and aren't sure what to do. Guy grow up fight with each other, even if it is just for play.
If I was fighting a girl with no skill I would try not to hurt her as much as possible. But if she was skillful I would knock her flat on her ass!
As for fighting guys, they normaly can over power a girl relatively easily, so I would fight like my life was at stake every time!

I am trying to see where you are coming from? My opinion on this is that most of the time if you take the time to see if they are skilled or not you are usually on your ass already. I assume every opponent could be trained and I also assume every opponent is definately out to hurt me bad.

I've had one fight with a woman as an adult and it was before I did MA's. She attacked me from behind and did all the usually "girly" stuff - trying to rip my hair out, scratching, trying to rip my ears open with my earrings etc. I guess it looked vicious bit the main thing I remember is how little it actually hurt or impaired me. Having no idea even how to punch, I was mostly just trying to limit the damage by disabling her arms then it got split up by some off-duty police. I'm pretty sure that given the same scenario today I'd finish it fast - she was so caught up in girly fighting that she left herself open to loads of attacks. Oh well.

At a party the other night one girl decided it would be fun to attack me, I'm still not quite sure why. I didn't actually hurt her at all, simply blocked and trapped, then took her down and stepped away. After six takedowns she caught on.

After 6 takedowns CKD you should have caught on and stayed on top of her! Youth is wasted on all the wrong people!:D

Nah, much more fun to do more takedowns. Besides, it'd have got back to my fiancee somehow and there'd've been hell to pay.

Being the big sexist i am I'd probably resort to grappling and try to control her (and rub my big manly body all... oh hold on wrong forum ;) ) unless she was obviously trying to kill me, then I'd bust her in the chops and tell her to **** off.
Thanx

Being the type of woman I am, I say that if the woman is woman enough to step up for a beating, then I am going to give her what she asks for.
I guess it would be different for a man. Some men won't hit women. It doesn't matter what she does while some men will knock a female out in a heartbeat. Oh goodness!

I have no problem with showing women respect but if they step up and expect to hurt me and get away with it then they're going to get one hell of a surprise. Especially if they're armed.
My wife's knocked me out more times than I have her (she's quite a good sparrer :0)) so I know that women CAN and WILL do their utmost to take you down and out. Most likely a good slap will stop most in their tracks but I'm not adverse to giving them a damn good punch if I have to, especially if they refuse to do the washing up! :0) (That was a joke btw, I'm no more sexist than the average english male, I even agree that the chain should be lengthed to allow easier movement between kitchen and dining room ). Sorry couldn't resist!:D

Good question really. I've been attacked by any number of hysterical females and usually just take the punishment until she cools off, since I don't enjoy hitting women. If she pulled a knife I'd run like blazes (i hate weapons) and attempt to surprise and do her over her if she followed.

In light of the thread Sparring with the opposite sex (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1248&pagenumber=3) ... I thought I would resurrect this thread started by Melanie ....
as she put it "Men will use strength as much as anything else when fighting but women (from what I have seen) are cunning and particularly vicious."
True??????? or False?

In Melanie's case, BELIEVE IT!
I think the thing us men find difficult in fighting women, is the fact that women were put on this earth to be servile to us, not fight with! ;)

No would never hit a lady unless my life was really at threat!
Use of locks and restrainst, sweeps, throws etc. I just have a hang up with strikes (hand and foot) on women. I don't like it and I do think a few women I could mention deserve a good kicking.
Just not me that can do it.

Never had to really "fight" a male ... except an occasional "slap" across the face and one time a well placed hook punch.....
I haven't "viciously" fought a fellow female in many many years.... (since high school) and then again they were few and far between. Of course it always had to do with a "man"... or defending one's reputation either your own or a girlfriend's.
I remember in the very few fights I was involved in (or viewed ) the girls involved would attempt to humiliate by ripping shirts off or whatever they could get ahold of. These fights more often than not were brought to the ground. I remember "tackling" a girl in the bathroom, grabbing around her waist and head butting her until I slammed her against the bathroom wall and from then on we were rolling around on the ground kicking and pulling hair ... MEOWWW!! I also remember using one of the swinging stall doors to bash her as she was heading towards me. Had I had any ma training back then I could only imagine the different turn in events.

I fight with girls all the time :D especially since the girl I'm fighting is my adopted sister (i'm adopted too so, yea you get the idea).
but if its not my sister then I wouldn't do anything except redirect their punches and kicks in another direction and try to tire them out.
Now If my life was on the line then I would find some cover and when they come around to find me I would get in front of them redirecting the gun away from my body and breaking their arm using the side of a building and punching them in the face 20 times then throwing them in a trashcan (this would apply if they shot my g/f i am with.)

That may be Ok when you're around 5, but it doesn't apply on the streets. Read Jack's thread, 'I got smacked', the outcome could have quite possibly been different if he initiated the pre-emptive strike after setting up a fence and made a fun for it.
That kind of attitude is rather disilusioned or ignorant in my belief. The person who strikes first generally wins.
To answer the question of this thread, if I feel like I'm in danger, then I don't care who you are, or what your gender is -- I'll use force as I see necessary. But, if it's just a girl hitting/slapping me because I've offended her or something with no real danger of knocking me out, I'd just restrain her physically and push her away from me out of reach. Who's to say if you restrain her she won't kick you in the balls?

Right
This is not a great thing to do but a few times when I was at school (few years ago now) but I used to get grief for being the toughest kid in my year from older kids.
When I would be up against it I would prepare myself during the taking jacket off stage and dropping my school bag, it was easy, I did MT/Kick boxing at the time so was naturally more agressive mostly from the MT side.
I would blame these kids (in my mind) for me being taken away from my parents. Hence in this situation I was pretty much unstoppable.
As I say not a great thing or somthing I am proud of but I was pumped full of adrenelin.
This is what I am thinking of - you?

I was raised strangely enough that ifa guy came up and started sh!t with me then I was with in my rights to level the F*cker ( I was the small kid in school until HIghschool) But I also was raised to NOT hit girls based on the reasoning that even if I am small I am still stronger than the average woman.
THis was taugh t to me by of all people my mom.
THat being said as I am now a 18 and 6 feet short at 155 pounds I am still some waht small but i will not hit a woman unless she had a weapon or I REALLY felt in danger like my life was on the verge of being extinguished. Guy comes at me I'll deck him no problem with little thought a woman I would just try not to get hurt.
However I have on two occcaisons had my 'little' sister slug me in the gut and it hurt ,but thats my sister who also was raised witht the 'dont take crap from people'
I also regularly weapon spar with women and some of them are quite sneaky when they need to be and i would have litel trouble taking them down cause I know the threat they could pose to me
