Hi All,

Can anybody recommend a good resource for music to perform Kembangan? My garden is too small to fit a Gamelan band. :)

cheers

Who needs a gamelan!?

All you need to do is to sing (out aloud or in your imagination) :

Ning ... nung ... ning ... nuung ... dhang ...dhang ... kendhang .... keprak ... prak .. prak ... keprak ... GUNG ... ningngenang ... ning ... nung ... ningngenang .... GUNG etc. etc. dsb :D

You can't begin to imagine how tight your performance will be ... I promise ... hehe!

Hi Itchy feet

go to farsidemusic.com

send an e-mail to Paul requesting these 2 titles:

Musik Tarian Malaysia vol 3 & 5. These 2 volumes in the series have 2 or 3 specific tracks that are Malaysian Silat music (gong, drum, serunai). I had to do some research to track these down and pass the info onto Paul to see if he could get them.

Also I can recommend Musik Gamelan Tarian Malaysia which he lists on his website.

Also recommend Gentra Pasundan's Bulan Dagoan (Gamelan Degung from Sunda)

Also recommend Sunda Bali by Sambasunda - blending Sundanese and Balinese Gamelan with flutes, violins and serunai. Very nice for kembangan.

Outside of Asia, Farside music is the best place to get gamelan music (or any Asian music for that matter).

Sorry if this sounds like a plug, but I have long been a customer of Farside music, and only they have been able to get the music I have been looking for, and believe me, I have even been to the Malay Village in Singapore hunting out CDs to aid in inspiring my kembangan...

Good Luck

LOL! Mas Krisno :)
I can imagine that, but to the person who never heard a gamelan, they may imagine "the Metalica" gamelan :)

Anyway, Wona Sumantri from Washington DC. performed Silat Kembangan at my Wedding reception. He was excellent. His silat styles was Al-Azhar. He got a standing ovation. For being nousy, after I gave him my highest respect and compliment, I asked him, some of the move look so familiar. He smiled at me and said: "Pak Tristan, I knew you will recognize it, because I accidently mixmatched the form. Some Sundanes and some Javanesse." "I replied: Wonna, don't say no more, it was excellent performance, Thank you!"
The name the cd that he dance is Gajah Putih Gamelan. Its a good one. as good as a Jimmy Buffet :) Just kidding ;)

Thank you for your suggestions. AnakMurid, I will definitely check out Farside. They seem to supply what I'm looking for.

As for the humming....I'll give that a miss for now. My neighbours might call the men in white coats.

Hi Itchy Feet

You are most welcome. I highly recommend Sunda-Bali, by Samba Sunda

While I cannot guarantee it, I am fairly certain you will be delighted with it, especially the final track.

You could also try Amazon. I have had quite a bit of success there too. Although they are not a patch on Farside though.

Cheers

I found that HMV (the bigger stores) sell Indonesian music from Java and Bali.
I have purchased a few CDs from there. I like kecapi-suling and often listen to it before I go to sleep, that’s when I practice my Kembangan :D I’ve loaded them all onto my MP3 player, marvels of modern technology!
